Joystick controller for playing on the new xbox series x console. Kiev, Ukraine - April 21, 2021
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has been making waves ever since she joined the gaming giant. This time around, the focus of the new CEO has shifted towards the exclusivity of Xbox.
According to a recent report by Tom Warren of The Verge, Sharma delivered a 40-minute all-hands speech to Xbox employees in late April, outlining a four-point action plan. One of the four points included speaking about games, where Sharma stated, "We will reevaluate our approach to exclusivity."
In the report, Warren writes that Sharma has been "evaluating a range of options for Xbox exclusive games, but is treading carefully here and isn’t yet ready to commit to any major changes."
Recently, many exclusive titles of Xbox have come to PlayStation, with Forza Horizon 5 being one of the biggest names, which also generated Xbox a hefty amount of money.
Furthermore, according to IGN, Microsoft had earlier indicated that future Halo titles may arrive on PlayStation as well. Now that Sharma has highlighted the need to work on the exclusives, it will be interesting to see if Xbox overturns its decisions, especially with the launch of Forza Horizon 6, which is likely to generate more revenue for the company due to its wider addressable market.
Moreover, on May 7, the Xbox Game Dev Update show also dropped. Let us look at what was said about Project Helix while also discussing Sharma's recent major changes since her arrival.
A plethora of changes for Xbox and more about Project Helix
The Xbox Game Dev Update show kicked off with Xbox veteran Chris Charla stating, "We were really proud to announce Project Helix at GDC, direct to developers." Jason Ronald, Xbox's VP of Next Generation, confirmed that Project Helix would play both Xbox and PC games.
Moreover, he emphasized the commitment to console, saying, "The console is absolutely core to Xbox, it is the heart of who we are, it will always be around, and it is critically important to our future."
He further confirmed that the developers will receive alpha versions of the next-gen consoles in 2027. Ronald also stated via an X post, "We will have more to share about Project Helix later this year."
This update is great news for Xbox fans, who have been receiving a lot of it recently. Sharma has made a ton of changes, from ditching the "Microsoft Gaming" name and coming back to Xbox to reducing the Xbox Game Pass prices.
She has also focused on adding features fans have been asking for, like the ability to turn off Quick Resume. Another recent change includes a new shiny-looking Xbox logo.
Asha Sharma is determined to lead Xbox toward a better future, and now, with a focus on exclusives, she is trying to preserve the uniqueness of the Xbox branding as well.
