Microsoft has officially started testing a free, ad-supported version of XBOX Cloud Gaming. It allows XBOX insiders to stream select games they already own without needing a Game Pass subscription.

The limited-time test gives eligible players one-hour streaming sessions across supported devices. That obviously comes after watching ads before gameplay begins. However, the ads will not interrupt gameplay. Participation also remains optional for those who prefer other ways to play.

The feature is designed around owned games rather than a subscription catalog. Players can stream supported titles from their library on Xbox consoles, PCs, supported smart TVs, and mobile devices.

As per Microsoft, the initiative is aimed at lowering the barrier to cloud gaming. It also gives Xbox One owners another way to access select Xbox Series X|S games without upgrading their hardware immediately.

In its announcement, Xbox acknowledged that advertising has been part of gaming for years. However, this test is built with the players in mind. The company outlined several principles for the experiment, like creating value, clearly identifying sponsored content, and more.

The announcement comes as Microsoft continues expanding its cloud gaming strategy. But at the same time, it is also looking for more affordable ways to bring players into the ecosystem.

During this initial test, sessions are capped at one hour. However, reports indicate players may be able to continue streaming by watching another round of ads. Microsoft has not announced when the feature will roll out beyond the XBOX Insider Program.

What Is the XBOX Insider Program?

The XBOX Insider Program is Microsoft's public testing initiative. It gives players early access to upcoming XBOX features before they roll out to everyone. Members can join the program by downloading the XBOX Insider Hub on XBOX Series X/S, XBOX One, or Windows PC and enrolling in available previews.

For the new ad-supported cloud gaming test, only XBOX Insiders can participate. XBOX regularly uses the Insider Program to test dashboard updates, system features, cloud gaming improvements, and new services.

Participants can report bugs, share suggestions, and help shape future XBOX experiences through the XBOX Insider Hub and the official XBOX Insider community.

Previews can be platform-specific, be it XBOX or Windows, and not all will be available across both.

For this latest test, Microsoft says Insider feedback will play a key role in refining how ad-supported cloud gaming works before any wider release.
