NVIDIA's latest AI tech, DLSS 5, is here. But instead of praise, it's facing a backlash. Artists and developers fear the new tool could override their creative vision, sparking a debate about AI's role in game design.
DLSS 5 usually comes in handy while enhancing lighting and materials in games. However, it’s the artist who ultimately decides on the usage of DLSS 5. Yes, it’s not the one-click filter. But many believe that DLSS 5 might override developers’ and artists’ vision. Many even believe that it’ll get forced into the modern games against the creators’ motives.
Take the photograph of Grace Ashcroft from Resident Evil Requiem, which has been going viral on social media, for example. She looked different from her in-game appearance. Even games like Bethesda’s Starfield and WB’s Hogwarts Legacy faced a similar problem. To many, it seemed like the AI simply restyled the visuals.
Meanwhile, there are some games that have started to rely heavily on AI instead of proper optimization techniques. This makes DLSS 5 a tool rather than a core solution. But the problem remains with the AI’s restyling.
Raul Izquierdo, an indie game developer, said, “The artist has a style, the artist has an art direction that you're going to give him, and that's something that AI kind of doesn't respect all the time.”
On top of that, AI is still not trusted across a major group of gamers. With people losing jobs due to AI keeping the community on edge, incorporating AI in designing attracted hostility from the gamers.
However, NVIDIA didn’t respond in kind.
NVIDIA Releases a Statement in Response to the Criticism Around DLSS 5
The CEO of NVIDIA, Jensen Huang, doubled down on the critics, saying that they’re “wrong” about the new technology.
“I have explained very carefully, DLSS 5 fuses controllability of the geometry and textures and everything about the game with generative AI,” Huang said. “All of that is in the control — direct control — of the game developer. This is very different than generative AI; it’s content-control generative AI. That’s why we call it neural rendering.”
Even Bethesda has talked in favor of DLSS 5, claiming that DLSS 5 bridges the “divide between rendering and reality.” Yet, their art teams would further adjust the lighting and final effect to look the way they think is the best for a particular game. While it will be under the creators’ discretion, players will also have the option to enable DLSS 5.
