Which Assassin's Creed Game Should You Actually Play First? [Opinion]

There are more than a dozen mainline Assassin's Creed games. And the series spans from the Crusades to feudal Japan. So, choosing the right one can be intimidating for newcomers.

However, the good news is that there isn't a single correct entry point to this franchise. Ubisoft has reinvented the franchise multiple times over the years. This means the best start depends on what kind of experience you are looking for.

Assassin's Creed II - Classic Assassin Experience

This game will be a perfect entry point for those who want to understand why this series became one of the biggest franchises in gaming history. Assassin's Creed II is set during the Italian Renaissance.

It introduces the series most popular protagonist, Ezio Auditore. The game improved every aspect of the original Assassin's Creed, from mission variety to parkour and combat. Still, it delivered the stealth-focused gameplay that defined the franchise's early years.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag - Standalone Adventure

If you want to dive into years of Assassin-versus-Templar lore, then Black Flag is for you. The story follows pirate Edward Kenway during the Golden Age of Piracy. It works well even if you've never touched another AC game.

This game is also different from the other titles of the franchise. It comes with naval exploration, ship battles, treasure hunting, and island hopping.

Assassin's Creed Mirage - Stealth Is Your Priority

Mirage actually returned the franchise to its roots. Unlike other RPG-heavy entries before it, this game puts stealth, assassination missions, and urban parkour back at the top.

Players get plenty of opportunities to stalk targets in the dense streets of Baghdad. They will also get to use tools, creativity, and approach missions from multiple angles.

Mirage lets you revisit the franchise's roots, removing the more RPG-like elements that have become a big part of the series.

Assassin's Creed Origins - Definition of Modern RPGs

Origins is probably the safest option for the new players. It's actually a soft reboot from the franchise. The game introduced RPG mechanics, skill trees, gear progression, and a more modern combat system.

At the same time, it tells the origin story of the Hidden Ones. This also makes it easier to understand the foundations of the Assassin Brotherhood. Beginners may like the Ancient Egypt setting and Bayek, who many regard as one of the series' standout protagonists.

Assassin's Creed Shadows - Latest Experience

Shadows is the latest installment of the franchise. So, this game will cater to the players who want modern visuals and current-generation designs.

The game features a Japanese setting and two distinct protagonists. Naoe focuses on stealth and assassination, while Yasuke emphasizes direct combat.

The dual-character approach works as a metaphor for both sides of the Assassin's Creed coin. Players can experience the franchise's evolving identity.

So, Which Game Should Most Players Start With?

If you want a direct answer, then it will be Assassin's Creed Origins. It doesn't need any prior knowledge of the previous games.

This game strikes a balance between modern gameplay, strong storytelling, and historical exploration. It also serves as a natural bridge between classic Assassin's Creed and the franchise's RPG era.

However, there isn't a wrong answer. If you choose Assassin's Creed II, Black Flag, Mirage, Origins, or Shadows, you will still get a solid introduction to this legendary franchise.
