Revving of engines, flying past the checkered flag, drifting around corners. One only knows how to feel it by experiencing it firsthand.
Racing games have been monumental since the very start of the gaming industry. Whether it be arcades, early consoles, or new-gen hardware and racing simulators.
They've given players every level of thrill that gaming has to offer. So let's take a look at 10 of the greatest racing games of all time that have left their competition in the dust.
10. iRacing (2008)
This remains the most premier and exclusive racing experience on the market. It's not for the casual gamer but for those who live, breathe, and want to experience racing at the most realistic, respectful, and competitive level. The undisputed king of sim racing. It is the virtual platform of choice for real-world motorsport professionals.
9. Ridge Racer (1994 on PlayStation)
It was the pioneer of early 3D console racing. It introduced an arcade-style, smooth drifting mechanic that went on to define an entire era of console gaming. The hard-hitting techno music, sharp handling, and bright visuals made it special. For those who remember, while the loading screen was active, players could play a mini-game of Galaxian.
8. WipeOut (1995)
WipeOut took one look at traditional cars and said, "What's that?!" This futuristic roller-coaster of high-speed spaceship racing took over like a wave. The original version, along with WipeOut 2097, remains just a cut above all other futuristic racing games. The licensed soundtracks from famous artists like Leftfield, Orbital, and the Chemical Brothers were an awesome addition.
7. Daytona USA (1994 North America Arcade)
This was the best head-to-head arcade experience in almost a decade. It utilized Sega's Model 2, which allowed for fully mapped 3D polygons running at 60fps. Takenobu Mitsuyoshi's catchy vocals and soundtrack, and the iconic "Daytooonaaaaaa" intro, are one of the most recognizable pieces of music in racing arcade history.
6. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (2001)
Gran Turismo 3's tagline read, "The Real Driving Simulator." And it had no lie. The physics engine in this game, with all the dynamic lighting effects, heat distortion, and super-high fidelity, set the standard for console racing games on the PlayStation 2. Featuring over 150 total cars and complex multi-hour races, it was the whole package a gamer could ask for.
5. F1 23 (2023)
It represents the pinnacle of modern esports simulation gaming. F1 22 was a divisive talking point in the community. But F1 23 made a complete overhaul to the traction and handling system, making the experience much more realistic. With AI integration, the competitors offered a more realistic challenge than just following a set grid path.
4. Forza Horizon 3 (2016)
Forza Horizon 3 remains the blueprint for open-world racing. It provided a platform for players to organize, plan, and execute customized races by giving them charge of the entire Horizon Festival. The whole Australian setting, with its various landscapes, played its part well.
3. Burnout 3: Takedown (2004)
It revolutionized the whole franchise by shifting the focus to aggressive driving. The fun you get by crashing into cars or shunting them into obstacles and walls is now rewarded with boosts! It wasn't a racing game, but rather a vehicular combat sport.
2. Need for Speed: Most Wanted (2005)
The culmination of the NFS Underground elements with better handling and gameplay. It was the golden standard of pursuit-style racing. The police chases and races against 15 rival drivers as you climb up the "Blacklist" were phenomenal. SUV Rhino units and spike strips kept your adrenaline racing at all times.
1. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2017)
It is the highest-selling racing game of all time and deservedly so. Highly accessible for absolute beginners as well as veterans who can incorporate drift mechanics and advanced controls. The perfect multiplayer game for a group of friends for some laughs, chaos, and fun. It is the product of years and years of kart racing experience bundled up into the perfect game.
