Top 10 Best Metroidvania Games of All Time

Apr 15, 2026, 4:16 PM CUT

Some games hold your hand and take you through their worlds. But Metroidvania games don’t. It drops you into a maze, gives you almost nothing, and quietly expects you to figure it out.

That feeling of getting lost, then suddenly understanding the world, is what makes this genre special.

Over the years, there have been some titles that have redefined the Metroidvania genre. Here are the top 10 of them:

1. Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight doesn't feel like a game. The world feels like a living ecosystem rather than a scripted game. You don't have any clear direction. You just wander through Hallownest.

But the world eventually teaches you how to move through it. Combat starts simple, but then it needs sheer patience and timing.

2. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

The "vania" in Metroidvania truly comes alive in Castlevania. The castle design has a constant loop, which keeps turning back in some clever ways. The RPG mechanics integrate seamlessly without overcomplicating the experience.

3. Super Metroid

Super Metroid doesn't speak loudly, but it teaches players how to play the game. You don't get to explore and experiment until you have played a good amount of the title.

Upgrades not only change your strength, but also how you interact with the world. On the surface, the game is simple, but incredibly well thought out when you dig deeper.

4. Ori and the Will of the Wisps

The main highlight of this game is movement. Traversal mechanics are smooth and rhythmic. As compared to the first game, this one has more options in combat. So, you can approach fights differently.

5. Metroid Dread

Metroid Dread is based on tight combat and responsive movement. The E.M.M.I. sections put pressure on the players, but it doesn't slow things down. The classic feel still stays, but the game becomes sharper.

6. Blasphemous

The world of Blasphemous is intentionally made tough and uncomfortable. You move forward out of curiosity as much as challenge. Instead of speed, the combat is based on precision.

7. Axiom Verge

Axiom Verge clearly takes inspiration from classic Metroid, but comes with its own touch. Your thoughts regarding the environment constantly change because of the glitch mechanics. Weapons solve problems as tools, besides fighting enemies.

8. Dead Cells

This game bends the rules a bit. Each run changes, but progress still matters. Combat is super fast and needs you to experiment with the build in order to succeed. It focuses more on mastery rather than keeping a single map in mind.

9. Animal Well

You don't know what to do at the beginning, and that's the whole idea. Progression relies on experimentation and discovery. The entire world feels like one big puzzle waiting to be understood. The game is quiet, but surprisingly deep.

10. SteamWorld Dig 2

There is no specific path to follow. So, you create one. The core experience revolves around digging. The steady progression is more relaxed than the other games in this list.
