The iconic franchise, The Legend of Zelda, already had its film's release date changed in March. But now, it has been changed yet again. The live-action film's release date has now been moved, but this time, it is in favor of the fans.
"We have decided to change the worldwide theatrical release date of the live-action film "The Legend of Zelda" from May 7, 2027 to April 30, 2027. In order to deliver it to everyone even one day sooner, the team is united in advancing production. It's less than a year until release, but please wait just a little longer," the official post read on X by Nintendo Japan.
The original release date of the film, when it was originally announced back in November 2023, was set for March 2027. However, the film's release date was later changed to May 7, 2027. The good news for fans is that this latest change now sees it released earlier.
"In order to deliver it to everyone even one day sooner, the team is united in advancing production. It's less than a year until release, but please wait just a little longer," Producer Shigeru Miyamoto further stated.
The project is being co-produced by Nintendo and Avi Arad, with Nintendo reportedly funding more than half of the budget to maintain tight creative control.
All About The Legend of Zelda Movie
The production of the film started back in New Zealand in November, 2025. The movie stars Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. The movie is being made by Nintendo in partnership with Sony Pictures.
The film is being produced by Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad. The latter has also been the producer of many famous films, like the Oscar-winning film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The upcoming film will be directed by Wes Ball, best known for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Back in March, 2024, the director spoke about the film's idea.
"I want to fulfill people's greatest desires. I know it's important, this franchise, to people, and I want it to be a serious movie. A real movie that can give people an escape," Wes Ball stated.
The director also said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the film is inspired by Hayao Miyazaki, the co-founder of Studio Ghibli and director of one of the most prominent Anime films, Spirited Away.
According to a movie industry insider, Daniel Richtman, Nintendo is planning a trilogy, also reporting that the major actors will be signed for a period of six years.
It will be a sight to see what the story will entail, as Nintendo has been quiet about whether they will take inspiration from a title or showcase an entirely new story through the film.
