Subnautica 2 Sells Over Two Million Copies in First 12 Hours

Subnautica 2 is near the top of the sales charts following its early access launch, selling over two million copies worldwide in less than 12 hours.

This includes copies sold only on PC and Xbox Series X|S, since it was not released on PS5 or the Nintendo Switch. That makes the achievement even more impressive, considering the audiences the game has not yet reached.

For many players, Subnautica was a thalassophobia-inducing sea adventure. The sequel has even more to offer, and it can now be played with friends.

Set on an alien ocean world, Subnautica 2 takes players deep into Leviathan-filled waters. The goal is to study the wildlife in the ocean and find ways to adapt to the endless deep blue.

On May 14, 2026, the game was released in an Early Access phase only. By May 11, 2026, more than 5 million players had wishlisted it. The potential player base for the game is clearly massive.

The success of the first game and Subnautica: Below Zero perfectly set up the sequel. Now, the question is whether it will live up to the hype. Thankfully, the improvements are vast and exciting.

Subnautica 2 Features Making It Stand Apart

The setting of the game is somewhat similar to the previous titles. The character accidentally arrives on a strange ocean planet and must uncover its secrets.

However, the story is richer. You work for the Alterra Corporation to pay off debt by risking your life. If you die in-game, the corporation reprints you like an affordable yet necessary document.

In this way, your character never truly dies. The job is simple: explore the planet and build tools and homes. Of course, the story quickly takes on a much larger shape.

Players discover new details about their friends, their work, and a civilization that should not have existed in the first place. The game features a significantly more detailed narrative than its predecessors.

The ocean includes dangerous creatures, new Leviathan-class monsters, like the Shiver and Collector Leviathans.

Subnautica 2 also features the World Tree, a dormant life form bigger than the most plants in the game. There could be a lore behind it, but nothing has been revealed yet.

The focus on storytelling is one of the strongest features of the game. Right behind it is the new four-player multiplayer system, which allows players to explore the ocean together with friends.
