Subnautica 2 Devs Reject Combat Despite Player Pressure

Subnautica 2 is already bigger, deeper, and more dangerous than the original game despite being in Early Access, yet Unknown Worlds is still rejecting player demands for a combat system.

As players continue exploring the ocean planet’s biomes and encountering massive Leviathans, many fans have argued that Subnautica 2’s larger scale and co-op gameplay require stronger combat mechanics.

Instead, the developers are focusing even more on making players feel vulnerable.

Subnautica 2's lead game designer Anthony Gallegos was clear about the creative direction of the game.

"I think it's a point of resistance that we'll get repeatedly while making the game, though we feel strongly about it. For us, the main thing is we want to listen to feedback from players who feel they can't defend themselves in an area or something like that, then we want to ideate on the means in which they can do that. But I think it's an important and interesting constraint to challenge players on how they can avoid things." he said.

The goal of the game is not to turn dangerous encounters into boss fights, but for players to avoid threats, escape danger, and rely on preparation, since that vulnerability-focused gameplay is what makes the franchise unique.

Subnautica also avoided combat systems. It focused on escaping, preparation, and defensive survival tools while dealing with dangerous creatures. Subnautica 2 appears to follow the same mechanic.

Unknown Worlds Continues Prioritizing Survival Over Combat

The developers explained that they want players to prioritize brainpower over firepower. Their goal is to maintain tension while exploring various environments filled with hostile wildlife.

This includes strategic evasion by learning predator behavior patterns, using distractions to redirect creatures, and making advanced tools for defense rather than harm.

The series relies on the tension of the unknown and a lack of total player control. Whether it is hearing a Leviathan nearby or entering a dark biome, it instantly becomes more thrilling when there are no weapons.

The game's larger world has only increased those discussions, as many players think a better combat system would be a natural evolution for the game.

Long-time fans argue that adding combat would strip the game of its unique identity.

For now, Unknown Worlds appears committed to preserving the originality of the games. While discussions regarding the combat system continue to grow, the studio's direction remains focused on survival, tension, and avoiding danger instead of diving in head-on.
