Square Enix Adds Feature to Support Its Old PC Games

Square Enix is retrofitting its PC back catalog with modern quality-of-life updates, adding Steam Cloud support as one of the improvements.

Modern features such as Steam Cloud have been added to legacy game titles like Daikatana, Anachronox, Mini Ninjas, Supreme Commander 2, and more.

In the Steam announcement posts for these games, Square Enix stated, "As part of our ongoing efforts to celebrate and enhance the Square Enix back catalogue, we’re reviewing a number of classic titles to see where we can introduce modern quality-of-life improvements. One key focus has been retrofitting Steam Cloud support, allowing players to seamlessly carry their progress across multiple devices, including PC and Steam Deck."

Mini Ninjas Via: Steam / IO Interactive

Back in December last year, Square Enix added Steam Cloud support for Just Cause 3 and Sleeping Dogs, a feature that was welcomed by users.

Steam Cloud enables global access to save files across various devices. Devices like the Steam Deck have benefited heavily from Steam Cloud support for these legacy titles.

This removes progress dependency on specific hardware or operating systems.

Square Enix is introducing further enhancements beyond cloud saves.

Square Enix Enhancing Legacy PC Games

Square Enix has been adding more support for legacy PC game titles. Enabling widescreen support and autosaves helps users enjoy enhanced visuals and prevents them from losing progress if they fail to save manually.

The company has also enabled support for higher frame rates, which helps players enjoy these legacy PC games on modern-era PCs.

It is well aware of the fan base's wish to play legacy game titles on new high-spec hardware, and higher frame rate support, along with widescreen support, enables players to do just that.

The publisher is also looking for ways to incorporate cross-platform support for titles so players can enjoy these PC games on other devices as well.

The Final Fantasy series is still surviving on PC, with Final Fantasy XI remaining very popular, which is refreshing to see after the PC ports of the Final Fantasy series were criticized for their mobile-styled UI and weak optimization attempts according to the community.

Square Enix appears to be addressing users' requests, which should help keep the games relevant in the current era before the next generation arrives.
