Sony Reports $765 Million Bungie Impairment Loss in Financial Disclosure

Sony Group Corporation took a major financial hit tied to Bungie in its latest FY2025 earnings report. The company disclosed a 120.1 billion yen impairment loss, roughly $765 million, related to the studio’s intangible and other assets.

The write-down was connected to Bungie’s game portfolio, with both Destiny 2 and Marathon reportedly falling short of Sony’s expectations.

Sony had already recorded a 31.5 billion yen impairment during Q2 FY2025 after Destiny 2 underperformed. The latest filing added another 88.6 billion yen charge in Q4, which also marked the launch quarter of Marathon.

In hopes of strengthening its live-service ambitions, Sony acquired Bungie in 2022 for about $3.6 billion. However, things did not go as planned.

Bungie has gone through layoffs, internal restructuring, and declining engagement for Destiny 2 since the takeover. Marathon also reportedly struggled to reach Sony’s commercial targets.

During an investor Q&A, Sony CFO and corporate executive officer Lin Tao had this to say regarding the matter:

"Earnings from Bungie's title portfolio did not reach our expectations, so we downwardly revised our business plan and impaired the full amount of the fixed assets related to Bungie except for goodwill,"

Sony’s Game & Network Services segment still posted a 12% year-over-year increase in operating income, reaching 463.3 billion yen, despite the impairment loss. The company also hit a record 125 million monthly active PlayStation users during Q4 FY2025.

Destiny 2 Fans Fear DLC Support Could Slow After Sony’s Bungie Write-Down

The disclosure added to growing concerns around the future of the Destiny 2 franchise, with many players questioning whether Bungie can continue supporting future expansions.

Concerns grew even further after Bungie communications manager Dylan Gafner (dmg04) shared an intriguing post on X, stating:

"Still have a few lighter TWIDs in the pipe. Community focused, emblems and foundation details. Know y’all are chomping at the bit for news. Dotting i’s, crossing t’s. Looking to have game focused articles as soon as they’re ready."

At the same time, Destiny 2 has continued trending downward following the release of Edge of Fate. Several fans have pointed to the expansion's system changes and lack of meaningful content updates as reasons for the decline.

The situation became even more concerning as Sony’s investor presentation focused heavily on Marathon while barely mentioning Destiny 2. However, Bungie has not made any announcements regarding a reduction in future Destiny 2 content plans so far.
