Sony may be preparing a major blow to Steam. New rumors suggest a dedicated PlayStation PC launcher is in the works, a direct response to Xbox's upcoming 'Project Helix' initiative. This move could change how PC gamers access top-tier titles.
XBOX FRONTLINE, a gaming expert on YouTube, claimed, “PlayStation is making their own launcher. Their own launcher is going to be the reason why they're pulling games away from Steam. They want you to log into their launcher, which is going to be a competitive alternative to everything.”
This aligns perfectly with Sony’s plans to no longer release the big PlayStation 5 titles for PC gamers through Steam. That means Ghost of Yotei and Saros will remain exclusive to the PS system, despite the predecessor games like Ghost of Tsushima and Marvel’s Spider-Man appearing across multiple platforms.
This has further given rise to rumors that Marvel’s upcoming game, Wolverine, will be released on PC on the first day. However, gamers can access it only through the rumored Sony launcher and PSN (PlayStation Network) account.
And that might be Sony’s strategy to avoid putting PlayStation games on Xbox’s upcoming console, Project Helix. After all, Microsoft is more of a service provider, which isn’t really concerned with console sales. Instead, they make money through Game Pass.
It’s worth noting that a PSN launcher has been in discussion for ages. But Sony might be changing its plans for the network.
A Peek Into Sony’s Plans for PlayStation Network
Insider Gaming recently came across an email sent to the developers, which contained information regarding the PSN branding.
As reported by Insider Gaming, the email read, “We’d like to inform you that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has strategically decided to phase out the terms “PlayStation Network” and “PSN” across our platform in order to properly capture the breadth of our evolving digital services. What’s changing and timeline.”
However, the changes are believed to be “purely visual” and won’t bring in any new “technical alterations.” It means that players’ assets, including friends, trophies, etc, will remain unaffected and available to the gamers.
The details of the new name remain a mystery. But it’s rumored to drop by September 2026. Even though the rumors come from credible sources, it’s worth taking them with a grain of salt.
