Seven ways video games accidentally changed the world [Opinion]

Video games are often treated as a break from the real world. However, sometimes the world created by code ends up influencing the real one.

From the GPUs that helped power modern AI to virtual economies worth millions of dollars, gaming has shaped far more than entertainment over the years.

Here are seven examples of how video games ended up influencing the world beyond the screen.

1) The Birth of AI

Early games were more CPU-dependent. However, a CPU has its limitations when it comes to calculating pixels or rendering graphics for a game.

The gaming industry then came up with the Graphics Accelerator, which eventually evolved into the Graphics Processing Unit we know today.

AI researchers realized that a GPU is perfect for training neural networks. It could also process a lot of information at the same time, known as parallel processing, which was essential for LLMs.

This helped lay the foundation for modern AI, all thanks to the desire for better gaming graphics and processing.

2) The Streamer Economy

Video games have evolved from simply being a playable medium to one that fans actively watch. Streaming giant Twitch is worth billions of dollars in 2026 after Amazon acquired it in 2014 for approx. $970 million.

Fans love watching their favorite streamers play games. This can range from casual viewing to competitive esports events such as the CS2 IEM Cologne Major, which racked up around 2.75 million viewers.

The streaming industry has created a whole new avenue for entertainment. It has also shone a spotlight on millions of creators, all thanks to video games.

3) Mobile Industry

The mobile gaming industry generally accounts for the largest revenue share in the entire gaming industry. In 2026, global mobile gaming revenue may be well over $130 billion, according to estimates by Statista.

Video games have drastically changed how mobile phones are made and purchased. Both Android and Apple devices are constantly pushing their CPU and GPU components to make them more viable for gaming.

The variety of mobile games can range from Candy Crush to GTA San Andreas, which makes the devices truly marvelous.

4) Digital Goods Worth Money

The microtransaction system has always been a topic of hot debate among gamers. Some believe that the practice is immoral, while others see it as a way to access desirable perks.

The best example of this was CS's virtual marketplace, where players could sell or buy weapon skins. Rare knife skins such as the Doppler Sapphire Karambit can be sold for thousands of dollars online.

Industries learned from this system, creating various virtual products that people would pay for. This includes the infamous NFTs, some of which sold for millions at one point.

5) Virtual Reality Simulations

For gaming to be more immersive, virtual reality was experimented with. However, it would inspire a completely different use. Militaries and pilot training schools across the world use simulators for their trainees.

One of the best examples of this is Marine Doom, a modded version of the original Doom game. It is used to train U.S. Marine Corps soldiers in squad communication and commands.

Virtual cockpit simulators are also useful for pilots in training, helping them learn how to fly a plane.

6) Film and TV

Unreal Engine 5, used to create modern video games, has helped change the way some films and TV shows are made. It is essentially a replacement for green screens.

Green screens are used to create artificial backgrounds in post-production. However, by using LED screens and Unreal Engine, filmmakers can now simply play photorealistic visuals in the background.

This provides more realistic, real-time imagery as required by the film. A recent example of this is The Mandalorian, where an LED screen played real-time images to portray an alien planet.

7) A Permanent Online Presence

Video games played a part in the creation of permanently online communities. They also normalized being online and socializing with other people in this manner.

Games like EverQuest and World of Warcraft made many players obsessed with online fantasy worlds. Players would spend hours clearing quests and building new identities in the game.

Today, people build identities on just about every social media app. They text, speak, and spend time with others online. Much of this started with video games in the '90s when the internet was taking off.
