7 frustrating things in Pokémon history we can't forget [Opinion]

Running out of Poké Balls during a rare encounter, watching a Pokémon flee in the Safari Zone, or sitting through the same Nurse Joy dialogue for the hundredth time are frustrations many fans know all too well.

While Pokémon games have delivered some of gaming's most memorable adventures, certain mechanics and design choices have also tested players' patience over the years.

Let's look at some of these frustrating issues users came across while playing their favorite Pokémon games.

Forgetting Poké Balls

Nothing is more frustrating than encountering a Pokémon you always wanted to capture and then seeing that you have no Poké Balls in your inventory.

You can find roaming Pokémon everywhere, and in earlier games, these encounters were more sudden, as they did not appear in the overworld.

This led to Pokémon gamers almost making it a protocol to never let their Poké Ball count fall below a certain count and always restock once it does fall below their predetermined threshold.

Repeating Nurse Joy's Dialogue

Pokémon games have certain sequences that have the same reaction from the game's characters every time. Every time you opt to heal your Pokémon, Nurse Joy repeats her dialogue every time, and the entire sequence of spamming your buttons to move through it as soon as possible can feel longer than usual.

However, if you end up mistakenly opting to heal your Pokémon again as a result of spamming your button as quickly as possible, it will only pile on your frustration.

Finding Mega Stones

Mega Stones actually form an important part of the modern Pokémon world and are widely considered a good addition to the entire evolution arc in Pokémon.

But it is the entire sequence of finding them that can prove to be frustrating for gamers. While some Mega Stones could be collected through battles or sequences, you could encounter some important Mega Stones while just strolling through an area; some of them were hidden with no real clues to finding them in the game.

Fans complained that since Mega Stones are important, they shouldn't be hidden but should be offered as rewards, being gatekept by a mission or a key Pokémon battle.

One-Hit KOs

One-Hit KO (OHKO) moves have been in Pokémon games for a while but were always seen as a gimmick. These moves usually start at around 30% accuracy, with the metric improving by one percentage point for every level the user has over the target, making user levels a key factor in their effectiveness.

Moves like Fissure or Horn Drill had a random OHKO effect in the fact that some key battles saw the enemy Pokémon use the move and just end the battle in one single hit despite it being improbable, according to the way the accuracy works.

The Safari Zone

The Safari Zone is a place where you can find, battle, and catch Pokémon you normally don't encounter. However, you could not bring any of your Pokémon to the area and would have to catch Pokémon from the Safari Zone and use them to battle and catch other Pokémon you encounter.

While the Safari Zone promised a lot, it failed to deliver, with rare Pokémon spawning very sporadically, and Pokémon could flee at any point during the encounter, with many fleeing instantly, much to the frustration of the users.

Event-Exclusive Mythical Pokemon Releases

Pokémon games often released many mythical Pokémon through time-limited exclusive events, with the likes of Mew, Celebi, Darkrai, Arceus, Victini, and more all being released by Game Freak and Nintendo as part of these exclusive events.

What infuriated players was missing out on these events if they purchased the game after the event's time range. Also, players who chased completion of the National Pokédex were left without an opportunity to ever log those Pokémon in it without trading for them.

Random Encounters During Exploration

In earlier Pokémon titles, Pokémon did not spawn in the overworld. Hence, you could not see Pokémon you could encounter while exploring and choose to ignore the ones you didn't want.

So, countless random Pokémon encounters while exploring made it a frustrating experience, especially if it was a Pokémon you did not want or already had.

Also, random NPCs in the Pokémon games often halt your exploration for conversations, some of which are meaningless and add no value to the entire game's storyline apart from extra dialogue.

This made what is supposed to be a fun exploration experience often lethargic and longer than usual.

Which was the most frustrating thing you came across while playing Pokémon games?
