Sarah Bond’s Farewell Message Has Xbox Fans Reading Between the Lines

A major leadership shakeup just hit Xbox. On the same day former CEO Phil Spencer retired, his expected successor, Sarah Bond, also announced her resignation. Her farewell message, however, has fans speculating there's more to the story.
With both Spencer and Bond out, Xbox's President of Microsoft’s CoreAI product, Asha Sharma, was promoted to the CEO position, and Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty was promoted to Chief Content Officer.
In her message, she directly addressed her team, writing, "I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built together over the past eight-plus years. PC and cloud gaming are growing faster than ever, our next console is well underway, and together we’ve helped lay the foundation for a more open gaming platform that spans devices and reaches players around the world."

In the last few years, Microsoft has been making big leaps in the gaming market. Not only did they bring Activision Blizzard into the fold, but kicked off Xbox Cloud Gaming to revolutionize how fans interacted with the platform. And to ensure Microsoft Gaming stays on the path to success, she will remain a Special Advisor to Sharma to ensure a smooth transition of authority.
"She [Asha] brings deep technology and commerce experience, along with a strong track record of building and scaling platforms that the world uses. Xbox deserves this. I'm excited to see her lead this next chapter for our team."
She ended the message by thanking Spencer for his years of mentorship and friendship, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella for his 'sponsorship and support' throughout her tenure.
Fan reaction to Sarah Bond's farewell message
Although her message was positive, fans examined Bond’s nuanced phrasing to see whether it masked concerns over Xbox's internal structure.
Speculating a pass-over for promotion, one reddit user wrote, "I could off course be wrong but that last bit reads like she thought when it was Phil’s time she was next batter up, she’d proven herself enough for it, and not getting the job led to her peacing out."

Since last year, Bond had been working closely with Spencer, who had decided to leave. A lot of fans had assumed Bond would take over, especially given that both had similar career trajectories. That's why her decision to step down surprised fans.
Another user defended Microsoft on the pass-over claim with an explanation, "Honestly that was probably it, but then AI boom happened and they probably figured she wouldn’t fit with that direction."
In the last few years, AI in game development has boomed to a whole new level, and Asha Sharma believes the future will need a greater space for it at Xbox. Perhaps that's why she's taking over the reins, instead of Bond.
One user even questioned Xbox's future and wrote, Ah, the farewell note. A very nice way of saying "if you like Xbox, bail now and don't look back."(Ya think they're resigning on purpose? Or did Satya finally pull the plug after years of failure?)
Well, even with the addition of Activision and a few changes, Xbox hardware sales had slowed down. In a report from January 2026, while Microsoft had an overall revenue increase of 17% year-on-year, gaming revenue went down 9%, mainly due to console sales. But one fan think the problem originated long before.
Someone commented, "Crazy to think this all started with the whole 'Always online' controversy and they just kept shooting their own foot nonstop for the next 13 years." It was a nod to Microsoft's 2013 controversy, where they faced backlash for their new console needing a constant network connection to work.
What do you think could be the future of Xbox after the management change?
