Riot Games officially announces League of Legends Classic

After months of rumors and accidental leaks, Riot Games has finally made League of Legends Classic official.

While the developer is keeping details scarce for now, the mode is designed to bring players back to an earlier era of League of Legends.

In the announcement skit posted on League of Legends' official X account, Executive Producer Paul "Pabro" Bellezza can be seen brainstorming the idea for the game mode. "Let me ask you this, Andrei, what is League to you?" he asks Head of League Studio Andrei van Roon.

"Is it Season One? Is it Season Four? Could it have been Season Two when we started having Jungle pathing?"

He further asks van Roon about "Two Shens in the game. Is it OG Beta when there was 40 Champions? Look at Lux. Look at the way she looked. It could be any of these things, Andrei."

Later in the skit, Bellezza finally reveals the mode's name in a lightbulb moment: League of Legends Classic. Fans will get more information about it on July 11, 2026, during the MSI Finals.

However, much about the game mode had already been leaked. Riot Games also accidentally leaked the mode onto its Public Beta Environment, where upcoming patches are tested.

Andrei "Meddler" van Roon later confirmed on Reddit that the reveal was originally planned for a few days before the MSI Finals, but leaks forced an earlier announcement. Those leaks point to the return of old Champions, items, maps, and gameplay kits, the last of which he also confirmed.

League of Legends Classic studio head addresses leaks

Leaks and rumors surrounding League of Legends Classic have been surfacing on the internet for a while now. Reportedly leaked character models dating back to pre-Season 1 have circulated on X for years.

Andrei van Roon responded to a comment on Reddit, saying, "I mean, everyone else seemed to be announcing it, so we figured we'd get in on the action."

This indicates that the LoL Studio Head was aware of the leaks. While these are unfortunately normal for most games in 2026, Riot Games also slipped up with the PBE leaks.

"Not going to lie, little grumpy we got so close to the planned reveal and then leaked some stuff at the last minute." The Studio Head said in yet another comment.

That being said, one should take leaks found online with a grain of salt until Riot Games officially reveals everything about League of Legends Classic in the near future.
