Square Enix just removed the 14-day time limit on the Final Fantasy XI free trial. The move celebrates the high-fantasy MMORPG's 24th anniversary by giving newcomers unlimited access to Vana'diel.
Released in 2002, the game has maintained an active player base for over two decades. On May 16, 2026, Square Enix celebrated the game's 24th anniversary with this announcement.
With a level cap of 75, players can explore Final Fantasy XI for as long as they desire. There will be nothing stopping them from playing the game as part of the free trial.
Therefore, if a player is okay with not receiving expansion packs and being limited to level 75, they can play the game for their entire life. Even after reaching the level cap, they can continue playing.
The decision arrives at a time when older online games struggle to attract new audiences. By removing the time limit, Square Enix has also lowered the barrier for players who initially may have avoided the MMORPG due to its age or subscription model.
Square Enix Celebrates Final Fantasy XI after FFXIV Director Mentioned a Standalone Title
The Final Fantasy franchise contains a massive library of mainline entries and spin-offs. These MMORPGs are massively popular among fans of the genre who enjoy playing with friends.
With the new extension to Final Fantasy XI's free trial, the gates are open to newer fans. However, the path ahead looked different for Final Fantasy XIV, at least in the mind of game director Naoki Yoshida.
At a recent Fan Festival in Anaheim, California, Yoshida mentioned a standalone FFXIV. He was also asked if he would be interested in a single-player version, to which he confirmed that he would be interested.
"While I do love to consider making a standalone Final Fantasy XIV, unfortunately, the only team that could make a standalone Final Fantasy XIV, the best standalone Final Fantasy XIV, is the current Final Fantasy XIV team," he said about creating a new title.
The game director even encouraged fans and professionals to pitch ideas if they were interested in a single-player game. However, as long as the fourteenth game's online version is running, an offline single-player version may not be possible.
Meanwhile, players can still try their hand at Final Fantasy XI and try the series. After all, there's a vast universe and many titles to enjoy in the franchise.
