Sony decided to pull the plug on PlayStation disc production in 2028, and for some fans, this was the last straw. It has received continuous backlash for its decision, and now may face a week-long blackout starting August 23, 2026.

X account @DoesItPlay1 is dedicated to preserving video games and hardware. On July 26, 2026, the user uploaded a post holding Sony Interactive Entertainment accountable for various decisions made over the last few years.

This includes the shutdown of beloved studios such as Bluepoint and pursuing its famously reckless live-service strategy. However, the post's biggest argument surrounded the ending of physical disc production.

“Ending physical discs in 2028 feels like the last straw. We understand there is only so much SIE can control, but with the decisions that are within its control, the company continues to mismanage the strong position it inherited from the PS4 era.” The post by @DoesItPlay1 reads.

“We are calling on PlayStation players to participate in an economic and gameplay blackout from Sunday, August 23, at 7:00 PM local time through Sunday, August 30, at 7:00 PM local time."

The post has reached 1.3 million views on X along with 18K likes. One might wonder just how effective this protest might be.

The PlayStation ecosystem is vast. It has an active playerbase of over 100 million players as of 2025 alone. If all those who liked the post comply with it, it accounts for less than 1% of the console's playerbase.

If everyone who viewed the post turned their PS5 off, it would still not be enough. However, fans deserve to be heard, regardless of how effective their numbers are.

A sizeable portion of the fanbase wants to preserve physical discs because they promote greater ownership of games. Unfortunately, their demands have been met with silence.

Prior campaigns: How fans have resisted PlayStation's all-digital push

This isn't the first protest against PlayStation's disc-less vision of the future. A petition called Don't Kill the Disc has been signed by over 340,000 fans.

The petition, as its name suggests, calls on Sony to keep physical discs for games alive beyond 2028.

In yet another move, hundreds or thousands of players began cancelling their PlayStation Plus subscriptions. This was a way to show the gaming giant just how much discs matter to its playerbase.

Alas, the console-maker has remained quiet regarding the situation. It has yet to address it since first revealing its plans for the year 2028.
