Sony's AI ambitions are no longer being kept behind the scenes.
The latest corporate strategy and earnings presentation revealed broader plans for AI usage across PlayStation game development, platform services, and player-focused features.
Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Hideaki Nishino called AI “a powerful tool” during the presentation and said:
“At PlayStation, our goal is always to be the best place to play and the best place to publish. We see AI as a powerful tool to help us in this mission. For our players, this will mean a gaming experience like never before. More immersion, more adventures, and fresh ways to enjoy their favorite characters. For our publishers, this will mean an even more efficient production environment and a better discovery to ensure their games reach the right audiences.”
According to Sony, the first party studios already use AI for repetitive tasks like animation, modeling, and quality testing.
An internal tool called Mockingbird is reportedly being used by teams at Naughty Dog and San Diego Studio to speed up facial animation production. Sony is also developing an AI-based hair modeling system using real hairstyle footage.
Talking about AI features, Sony explained PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) uses machine learning to make games like Ghost of Yōtei and Saros look sharper on the PS5 Pro.
Alongside that, the company confirmed a joint project with Bandai Namco Entertainment tied to generative AI and video production for PlayStation.
Sony’s AI Push Arrives Amid Growing Backlash From Gamers and Developers
It is clear that Sony is taking a different route with its AI strategy. The company’s push comes during a tense period for the gaming industry.
The concerns about generative AI being a sensitive topic among the gamers was also highlighted at the presentation, since Larian Studios received backlash for using AI during development.
According to Sony Group CEO Hiroki Totoki, “human creativity must remain at the center,” while also describing AI as “an amplifier of human imagination” rather than a replacement for artists or performers.
During the Q&A session, Nishino also repeatedly said AI would be there to “augment” creators rather than replace them.
Speaking about the problems of the current AI systems, Sony stated that large-scale creative work is struggling with “consistency and controllability.”
Players remain split on the whole idea, but AI is clearly becoming a bigger part of PlayStation’s future plans.
