Tracking PlayStation player counts was always somewhat difficult. Now, with a new update, Sony is beta testing a feature for an in-built tracking UI. The new feature will allow regular users to view the weekly player counts for the top 10 games. The count will be adjusted according to the region/country.
Revealed by a YouTuber, Mystic, the new Welcome Hub widget is all about sharing PS5 data with players. In a video, the creator showed the top 10 games in the U.S. and their weekly player counts.
In the U.S., the current most popular games, as per the update, were as follows:
Fortnite: 14.6m
GTA 5: 5.13m
Minecraft: 4.97m
Call of Duty: 4.95m
Apex Legends: 1.72m
Marvel Rivals: 1.58m
Battlefield 6: 1.51m
ARC Raiders: 972k
This is somewhat different from SteamDB's concurrent player count. It does not show the active number of players in a game. Instead, it shows anyone who started said game during the last 7 days.
It can help track how players engage with certain games. Titles like Fortnite and Call of Duty were mentioned in the US list of top 10 games.
Since these are extremely popular games, dethroning them may only be possible for new trending titles. This brings up yet another interesting feature.
The Welcome Hub Feature May Change How We See PlayStation 5 Data
The Welcome Hub widget most likely shows data from the PS5. This means that anyone who opens a top-10 game on their PS5 will contribute to the ultimate number.
However, this isn't the only feature. Another tracks trends by monitoring surges in activity. So if a game suddenly becomes popular, your Welcome Hub will know.
This works similarly to SteamDB’s trending chart. Every so often, a new game shakes up the gaming world. For instance, Subnautica 2 recently sold over 2 million copies in just 12 hours.
Sudden spikes in popularity like this may be tracked on the Welcome Hub widget. This would allow the PlayStation 5 player some insight into what's popular and in demand.
However, this feature may be limited by region. Therefore, every country may likely see different statistics based on which game is popular in the local zone.
Sony is simply beta testing the feature; there is no official release date for it to go live on PlayStation 5 yet. It's also unclear whether it will be released on older models or not.
