PlayStation and Xbox go head-to-head with God of War and Fable game releases

Xbox's upcoming game, Fable, has already been delayed twice. When it finally releases, it'll come out exactly one week after PlayStation's God of War Laufey.

The two iconic games will therefore likely lock horns to get the most attention. Fable was originally intended for a release in 2025; however, it was delayed to Fall 2026 for more development time.

Later, the game was delayed to February 23, 2027. According to the studio, it was done "so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves." The February date would help it avoid the release of GTA 6, which no major studios want to compete with.

On the other hand, PlayStation revealed that God of War Laufey is coming out on February 16, 2027. It is a return to an iconic and beloved franchise.

However, the absence of Kratos has been a major discussion point among fans.

The game is instead focused on his wife, Faye. It chronicles her adventures through the afterlife as she battles gods from various pantheons.

The game will likely draw a ton of players. Fable is also a return to a familiar place as Playground Games reboots the beloved franchise.

However, God of War Laufey is a PlayStation exclusive. Fable, on the other hand, will be released on both Xbox Series X|S and PS5 along with PC.

Santa Monica's exclusive could overshadow Fable's launch on the PlayStation, as players may still be busy with it when Fable comes out.

Moreover, the game is set for a day-one release on Game Pass, which means PlayStation sales will be crucial for it. But will it make the cut?

Does the Xbox Game Pass Subscription hurt launch sales?

The Game Pass essentially offers a plethora of games at a fixed monthly price. This means that players can gain access to various $60-$70 games at a much lower price.

Bloomberg's journalist Jason Schreier recently revealed that some people in Xbox studios dislike Game Pass.

"There are a lot of people out there in studio leadership within Xbox who absolutely detest Game Pass," Schreier said on the Triple Click Podcast.

"(They) think it has destroyed the value of their games, think it has taken away the value from all games in general and has been a detriment to the games industry in those people's view, because of how it devalues games."

This is especially bad for games like Fable that get a day-one release on Game Pass. The upcoming RPG has spent roughly six years in development just for it to become available on the subscription service on the day of its launch.

Therefore, the studio must rely on sales on PS5 and PC to make the numbers worth its development. Schreier believed that at some point, Xbox might get rid of the day-one release strategy for Game Pass completely.
