Nintendo Drops 5 Free Games, But With a Catch

If you have been looking for a reason to dust off your Nintendo Switch Online subscription, this might be it.

Nintendo is giving Switch and Switch 2 owners access to five free games, each rooted in one of the company's most infamous chapters: the Virtual Boy era.

The new free games include Jack Bros., Space Invaders Virtual Collection, V-Tetris, Vertical Force, and Virtual Bowling.

For those unfamiliar, Nintendo's Virtual Boy was the company's first attempt at a virtual reality-style gaming experience back in 1995. However, it was received somewhat poorly, leading to poor sales.

Now, the company has brought the Virtual Boy back. Players will need the new device model to play these games.

Apart from requiring a Virtual Boy, players will also need an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription and the Expansion Pack. If you meet all of these conditions, you can play the five games at no extra cost.

More About the New Nintendo Games

The aforementioned games are available for the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. All of them were released originally for the Virtual Boy.

Jack Bros. is a maze game where players play as either Jack Frost, Jack Lantern, or Jack Skelton. The game's concept involves escaping the maze and getting back to Fairyland, where the characters belong.

If the player loses, the Jack Bros. get trapped in the real world forever.

Space Invaders Virtual Collection is a shoot-em-up arcade-style game. Veterans of the gaming world must be familiar with this type of video game. You command a ship and shoot down enemies in an infinite space and an endless loop.

With the Nintendo Virtual Boy, the game gets a more 3D look while playing.

The same can be said about Vertical Force, which is yet another shoot-em-up game where you command a warship in space.

On the other hand, V-Tetris is merely a more advanced version of the tile game, Tetris. Players must clear horizontal lines to score points, and the game gets a 3D makeover.

Finally, Virtual Bowling is rather straightforward. You get to bowl in virtual reality and earn points by taking down pins, just like in real bowling.
