9 things you probably missed in Pokémon X and Y [Opinion]

Pokémon games have a lot of hidden lore, exploration opportunities, and encounters that players tend to miss.

Pokémon X and Y was a vast game and one of the most popular ones in the 2010s. While players had a fun time exploring the entire Pokémon world in the game, many still missed some details.

These details range from missed encounters and hidden storyline arcs to a hidden Mega Evolution Stone-finding mechanic and free healing opportunities.

We take a look at nine of those details that most players tend to miss while playing Pokémon X and Y.

The Strange Souvenir

In a Lumiose Hotel, you will end up receiving a random gift called "The Strange Souvenir." The item's description reads, "A souvenir from a region far away."

While people ignored it and continued the game, players realized years later that it depicted an Alolan guardian deity, foreshadowing Pokémon: Sun and Moon.

You can't really blame yourself for missing this detail when almost everyone was unaware of it for a long time.

Lumiose City's Hidden Style System

While you may not realize it, Lumiose City silently tracks your Style. Every time you shop, get haircuts, visit shops and restaurants, ride taxis, and more, your Style gets upgraded.

Upgrading your Style sees new shops open up, NPCs change behavior, discounts appear more often while shopping, and more.

The Ghost Girl of Lumiose City

In a Lumiose City building, you encounter a mysterious gliding woman upon reaching the higher floors in a silent environment. During that interaction, the character utters a sentence before disappearing.

People have tried to find the lore behind the woman but have failed to do so, as the character has not been referenced in any other incident or event in Pokémon X and Y thus far.

Inverse Battles

Inverse Battles was a refreshing concept where type weaknesses and interactions became inverse during battles. Hence, if an Electric-type is naturally powerful against Water-types, it becomes weaker against such types and stronger against types it was weaker against in normal battles.

Since only a few NPCs in Pokémon X and Y offered this Inverse Battle phenomenon, players who never came across such characters never experienced the beauty of this inverse concept.

The Mega Ring Upgradation

You will come across a mysterious sundial in Anistar City. While many viewed it as a mere visual addition, after completing the game, your rival reveals that the sundial resonates with Mega Evolution energy.

If you visit it between 8 PM and 9 PM, a mysterious character appears and upgrades your Mega Ring. Once upgraded, you can see all the hidden Mega Stones on the map throughout Kalos.

Many players simply chose never to explore this phenomenon.

The Detective Looker Storyline

While the main goal is to become a Pokémon Champion and many players stop playing after that, the game offers a compelling post-game storyline as Detective Looker arrives and recruits you for investigations.

While you will investigate various things and do a lot, one of the quests involves saving a girl named Emma. Emma is a young orphan whom Detective Looker takes under his wing, along with her companion Espurr named Mimi.

Players who never played beyond the completion of the game missed this story arc.

The Frost Cavern

The Frost Cavern contains the only Ice Rock in Kalos. But there is more to it than just the Ice Rock. There is a healer on the higher levels of the cavern who will heal all your Pokémon for free immediately.

You can also encounter Team Flare, and their use of Abomasnow's distress to release Pokémon Energy foreshadows how Team Flare is obsessed with exploiting Pokémon Energy.

The Hidden Azure Bay Caves

While Azure Bay is mostly there for surfing, hidden caves are scattered across several tiny islands around the bay. These hidden caves can help you collect Evolution Stones and TMs, while also providing some uncommon Pokémon encounters.

Since Azure Bay is so large and most players see surfing as its primary purpose, they often miss exploring the hidden caves on the tiny islands.

The Battle Chateau's Rank System

While everyone takes part in the Battle Chateau once and leaves after winning, few know that the Battle Chateau has a hidden Rank System, a hidden Pokémon Trainer Battle Ladder, if you will.

This progression system rewards players with better rewards, bonuses, and rarer opponents with every promotion, and it is a detail many miss simply because they never feel the need to battle multiple times after conquering it once.

Pokémon X and Y was a gold mine of hidden and easily missed details. Which detail did you know about Pokémon X and Y?
