New Nintendo Rumors Reveal Big 2026 Plans, but No 3D Mario Game Soon

A new report details Nintendo's ambitious 2026 plans for the Switch 2. It includes the return of classic franchises like Star Fox and Zelda. But the biggest news might be what's missing.
According to credible Nintendo insider NateTheHate, the console company is planning for a massive year for Switch 2. However, a new 3D Mario game is reportedly not part of the lineup.
In a new podcast, the insider claimed, “Star Fox is coming back in summer 2026. We’re getting a new Star Fox game in the very near future. I’ve been told it’s a classic style Star Fox game, [and that] the visuals are supposed to be very good, and I’ve heard it does have online multiplayer.”
This is going to be the franchise’s first major release since Star Fox Zero. Early details describe it as a “classic-style” experience with strong visuals and online multiplayer.

Alongside it, titles like Splatoon Raiders, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, and Rhythm Heaven Groove are expected to arrive in the same window. There are also reports of a new or updated Nintendo Switch Sports.
Now here's what he told me about the major miss of this year: “One game that will not be releasing in holiday 2026 is 3D Mario. 3D Mario will be releasing in 2027."
It seems this year will be focused on reviving classic franchises and celebrating major anniversaries. That's why a full remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is leading the rumored slate.
NateTheHate also suggests that there might not be a general Direct until June 2026. This means many announcements might come through smaller reveals.
Despite many surprises to look forward to this year, the absence of a 3D Mario title is disappointing for the fans. It has been nearly a decade since the last major entry in the franchise, Super Mario Odyssey.
Additional reports suggest Switch 2 Editions of Pikmin 4 and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are also planned for 2026. Meanwhile, third-party title The Duskbloods is targeting a later release window.
All of these leaks should be taken with grains of salt. Still, the successful track record of NateTheHate keeps fans dreaming, and a bit sad as well.
Why Nintendo might be saving 3D Mario for a bigger 2027
Super Mario Odyssey is still one of the most successful titles on the platform ever. To carry the legacy of 'Super Mario Odyssey' forward, Nintendo's next entry needs to be exceptional.
Reports suggest 2027 will also be a major year for releases. Hence, releasing a 3D Mario title next year would allow the company to pair it with major projects. A new Pokemon title and even a Zelda movie are rumored to be lined up for the upcoming year already.
For now, 2026 is going to be focused on legacy and nostalgia with the likes of Star Fox and Ocarina of Time. And that will be a perfect platform for Mario's comeback in 2027.
