Santa Monica Studio's creative director Cory Barlog had promised that God of War Laufey is a part of a "larger tapestry" in the universe. Now, Barlog's promise is about to materialize.

At the July 2026 San Diego Comic Con event, Barlog confirmed that a Kratos-centered God of War game is coming. Though the creative director didn't reveal a release date, he informed fans that it would be after God of War Laufey.

The upcoming title focused on Kratos' wife has received a release date of February 16, 2027. Its story is said to be directly connected to the next game.

"Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next," Barlog said during a panel as reported by IGN.

"Phranque has been around since the beginning. It's interesting to see how to build this world out. Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing."

God of War Laufey marks the return of Deborah Ann Woll as Faye, whose passing kicks off the events of GoW 2018. The game will show her journey through the afterlife as she battles gods from various pantheons.

The trailer for the upcoming game gave fans a quick glimpse of Kratos. However, he is not set to be a playable character.

The game will introduce fans to a lot of other characters. This includes Phranque, the talking cube played by Jack Quaid, and Rue, an enchanted ribbon voiced by Perlina Lau.

Some fans criticized God of War Laufey for Kratos's absence; after all, he is the God of War. But Faye's tale is crucial and leads us to the next part of the overall narrative, as Barlog confirmed.

Santa Monica confirms: More God of War Games about Kratos on the Horizon

God of War Laufey was announced at June 2026's PlayStation State of Play. Instantly, fans noticed that though Kratos makes a very short appearance, he may not be a big part of the game.

Later, studio creative director Cory Barlog and the game's director, Ariel Lawrence, addressed the issue in a YouTube video.

"Faye, while it's a different thing, it's still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly want to explore - all of these different characters in there," explained Barlog. "But there's always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history. We're super excited about that."

Later, the Santa Monica Studio X account would reiterate their take. "Kratos is the God of War, we have many more stories to tell with him."

With the brand new confirmation, it appears that the studio is ready with more work to be revealed in the future.
