Mojang Studios introduced the peaceful Happy Ghast in the June 2025 Chase the Skies update. This new flyer allows players to navigate the Nether without facing explosive fireballs. By raising a Dried Ghast, players gain a multi-person mount capable of aerial cargo transport.
Find a Dried Ghast
The journey begins by finding a Dried Ghast in the Nether. These can be easily found around the Soul Sand Valley biome near Nether Fossil structures. Dried Ghasts are small skull-like blocks that can be broken by hand.
This mob can also be crafted using eight Ghast Tears and one Soul Sand block. This may be a rough alternative for gamers who would rather avoid exploring the Nether and fighting the mobs.

Piglin bartering can also reward it, though the odds are relatively low.
Converting the Dried Ghast into a Ghastling
After obtaining the Dried Ghast, it must be placed in water. A recommended way is to dig a 2x2 section around your base, fill it with water, and place the mob inside.
The Dried Ghast starts its 20-minute hydration process and begins returning to life. Its expressions gradually change from sad to neutral and eventually happy.
If it is removed before the transformation is complete, the process resets. Once complete, the block changes into a Ghastling, which, unlike Ghasts from the Nether, is a peaceful mob and simply floats around investigating the nearby environment.
Raising the Ghastling into a Happy Ghast
The Ghastling requires an additional 20 minutes to fully evolve into a Happy Ghast.
Fortunately, the process can be sped up by feeding snowballs to the Ghastling. The mob is attracted to snowballs, which allow for an accelerated growth rate.
Once fully grown, a Happy Ghast becomes a passive flying mob. It is not tameable like Wolves or Cats but can be equipped with a Harness and used as a mount for traveling by up to four players.
How to Harness a Happy Ghast
Before riding a Happy Ghast, players must equip it with a Harness.
A Harness can be crafted using three leather, two glass blocks, and one wool block. The color of the Harness depends on the color of the wool block used, thus customizing its appearance.

To craft a Harness, open the crafting table and place the items as mentioned below:
- Leather, Leather, Leather - Row 1
- Glass block, Wool block, Glass block - Row 2
- Empty - Row 3
The Harness can be dyed any color once crafted.
To place it on the Happy Ghast, keep it in the character's hand and interact with the mob. This allows the player to ride and control it. The Harness remains on the Happy Ghast until removed.
Since these are flying mobs, they can drift away if left unattended. To prevent losing track of one, players can attach a lead and secure it to a fence or a suitable anchor point when not in use.
What Can You Do With a Happy Ghast?
Happy Ghasts can carry up to four players, making them one of the best modes of transportation in the game, both in single-player and multiplayer modes. The first player to climb onto the mob gets to control it.
They can also be used as platforms for constructing large structures.
Exploration is another advantage. Flying above the terrain makes it easier to spot villages and other structures while avoiding ground-level obstacles.
Happy Ghasts do more than just carry players. The updated lead mechanics allow them to transport boats through the air as well. To do that, simply attach a lead to a boat, then crouch and interact with the mob.
The boat will now hang as cargo beneath the Happy Ghast, which can carry additional players, other mobs, or even be chained together with other Happy Ghasts to transport multiple villagers.
It may not be as quick as an Elytra, but as an early- to mid-game transportation option, it is quite helpful and does not require farming gunpowder to create rockets.
