Marvel's Wolverine Review Roundup: Insomniac’s Unleashing its Bloodiest Game Yet

Insomniac Games has now launched Marvel’s Wolverine officially on PS5 and there’s a lot gore going on in it. This game is totally action packed and there are multiple elements that are surprising to see. Wolverine already has multiple spin offs with this release adding to the solo game collection of 6. As a result, Wolverine has broken records for the most spin off video games of an X-men character (Guinness World Records). The first one was released in 1991.

Wolverine’s previous and most recent voice actor Steve Blum has not been the choice this time for Marvel’s Wolverine. Liam McIntyre is the voice actor currently active as Logan within the game. He has held the record for most credits for Wolverine across 22 games (Guinness World Records).

The setting for this game follows the same universe as the game studio’s Spider-Man titles. Within which, Wolverine will be working as a part of Team X. There are multiple mutants like the Sabretooth, Jean Grey and Mystique within the plot for this game (IGN).

Combat and Performance

IGN has described the combat within this game as crowd focused and intense. It is built with a berserker rage mechanic in mind and it heals Wolverine mid-fight. However, new abilities for Logan/Wolverine unlock slowly. There are also repeated encounters that may feel too repetitive for the more action focused game like this. On the technical side, IGN has also noted the smooth and strong visuals with 120Hz support. They call the game "jaw-dropping" with only a single crash across a 14-hour game play (IGN).

Player Reception

While Metacritic scores landed around 77 based on over 100 outlets, Vice reported that PlayStation Store reviews tell a different story, with a 4.83 out of 5 rating and over 92% of reviewers giving it five stars (Vice). Following complaints about repetitive combat and overly guided objectives, Insomniac director James Stevenson confirmed on X that the studio is actively working on updates based on player feedback, according to Vice's reporting (Vice).
