Leviathan Axe or Blades of Chaos: What's better in God of War games? [Opinion]

Kratos has slain gods with both the Blades of Chaos and the Leviathan Axe. The blades were the first iconic weapons wielded by the God of War in the original games.

The Leviathan Axe, on the other hand, was introduced in the 2018 reboot of the franchise. It's a refined weapon imbued with Norse frost magic, capable of returning to Kratos' hand after being thrown.

Both weapons have seen significant improvements over the years. This is especially true in God of War Ragnarök. However, both weapons serve different functions.

The Blades of Chaos are a lot more personal. The chained swords are made for close-quarters combat and are Kratos' original weapons. A gift from Ares, the Greek God of War, the swords helped Kratos dominate the pantheon in the original games.

The Leviathan Axe, on the other hand, offers versatility and represents a more tactical approach to combat. It can freeze enemies in place, attack multiple enemies at a distance, and inflict frost damage.

The axe represents a more mature Kratos, who must battle Mjölnir-wielding Thor. It is both a tool and a weapon in the right hands, having once belonged to his wife, Faye.

In terms of raw combat dominance, the Blades of Chaos edge out the Axe. They provide Kratos with increased mobility and deal fire damage to opponents. Capable of chained attacks and crowd control, the Blades are perfect for taking down a field full of enemies.

Moreover, the Blades of Chaos make Kratos highly capable of harpooning and launching enemies around. They're brilliant at closing distance and brutal once they're in range.

It's also important to factor in their historical significance to the series. One could argue that the Blades of Chaos made Kratos more memorable, helping make the original God of War games fun and popular. Without them, it could have been a different story altogether.

Why some players may find the Leviathan Axe more appealing in God of War

The Leviathan Axe is also an incredibly powerful weapon. It doesn't boast the same historical significance as the Blades of Chaos. It's also not as viscerally brutal in combat.

However, the axe is efficient. It's the weapon of a reluctant God of War who still knows how to fight and slay. Its frost damage is very useful in battle, and the axe can deal a ton of damage.

The recall mechanic feels extremely satisfying, especially after finishing off several targets at the same time.

That being said, the Leviathan Axe is certainly slower than the Blades of Chaos. Its attacks require more deliberation and better timing. This almost certainly implies a higher skill ceiling.

The Blades of Chaos are easier to use and learn. They make gameplay feel faster and combat movement more fluid. Not only are they perfect for crowd control, but they're also great for one-on-one battles.

The axe makes up in power what it lacks in speed. It hits enemies quite hard and freezes them in place for successive hits. Precision strikes are even more rewarding, as they deal more damage.

In the end, it comes down to player preference. While some enjoy fast-paced combat, others find versatile mechanics more rewarding. Both weapons are equally dangerous in Kratos' hands, with the main difference being how long they take to master.

Future games may further refine their mechanics, potentially changing the verdict over time.
