As Infinity Ward and Activision announced the upcoming release of Modern Warfare 4 this year, the video game developer has also committed to authentic cosmetics and no gimmicks that take away from the feel of a high-octane action shooter like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
As the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series heads towards a crucial breaking point, Infinity Ward replied to an X user, promising no collaborations that will be counter-productive to the authenticity of the game's mechanics, visuals, and design.
Replying to X user Kapt'n Krunch, the official Call of Duty team handle committed, "No Lady Gaga. No Omni-Man. No Teletubbies. No SpongeBob. Keep the receipts."
This means any and every collaboration will be done only after considering its effect on the overall game's experience. Infinity Ward's promise means we are unlikely to see celebrities come into the game, unless it makes sense. This comes after Call of Duty previously integrated musicians such as Snoop Dogg, Nicki Minaj, and 21 Savage as playable operators in Modern Warfare II.
No collaboration will take away from the serious tone of the game and the storyline that Infinity Ward is trying to take the user through with its campaigns.
However, skepticism remains, mainly because of what Activision and Infinity Ward have done in the past.
Why is Infinity Ward's Promise Tough to Digest?
While a public declaration like this one can increase user trust in Infinity Ward and Activision's commitment to maintaining the integrity of the Call of Duty video game series, the audience is still wary because of previous incidents.
As per Mollie Taylor from PC Gamer, this isn't the first time Infinity Ward has promised fans this.
"Of course, this isn't the first time we've heard this. Activision said essentially the same thing about Black Ops 7 in 2025, acknowledging complaints about Call of Duty skins and promising that skins will "be crafted to fit in the Black Ops identity." Five months later, Fallout arrived."
The 2018 Modern Warfare game saw Anime tracker packs being introduced, whereas Modern Warfare II had a host of celebrity playable operators added without having any connection to the story or the tone of the game.
Modern Warfare III crossed further lines, introducing even WWE wrestlers, cartoon-style skins, Gundam, and even Monster-themed operators that almost forced players to label it a more gritty and serious version of Fortnite.
So obviously, while Modern Warfare 4 promises none of the above so far, people maintain a level of skepticism, which will only go away after the game releases and continues to deliver upon this promise.
Do you think they will stick to their promise?
