The approaching end of physical media has many gamers concerned, but Dan Houser isn't particularly moved. The Rockstar Games co-founder's opinion makes a difference because GTA 6 is also skipping a disc release entirely.
Dan Houser wrote almost every GTA game and co-founded Rockstar Games with his brother, Sam Houser.
After the GTA 6 disc controversy, he was asked about the physical media debate at San Diego Comic Con in July 2026.
“I don’t know that I care, but if people want that, I think companies should provide it,” he told IGN in an interview.

“But I don’t know that I personally care. And I also think that the ability to update games – as critical as people are of digital releases – the ability to update and fix problems in games has been really useful for the quality of games.”
Houser was attending the event with his long-time contributor, Lazlow Jones. The two now work together at Absurd Ventures, famous for its comic book series, American Caper.
Meanwhile, GTA 6 is coming out on November 19, 2026. It'll be the first modern GTA game that Houser hasn't personally written since leaving Rockstar Games in 2020.
Later in the interview with IGN, he spoke about physical media as a whole, saying, “I love physical media, I think everyone does.” However, the remark wasn't specific to video games.
Apart from the books, Houser also revealed that Absurd Ventures was working on at least 2 open-world titles. However, he did not explain the release plan for these games or provide any details.
Will GTA 6 ever be released on disc?
GTA 6 is skipping a disc release for the foreseeable future. The game's physical copy will instead come with a digital code in a box.
In June 2026, the internet became flooded with an email from Rockstar Games support hinting at physical copies in the near future.
However, later on, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the physical copies mentioned in said email referred to the digital code-embedded boxes, not discs.
As for discs, the developer has no plans to print them in the coming months or the near future.
