How to Survive Your First Night in Minecraft

Apr 24, 2026, 8:30 PM CUT

Minecraft drops players into a hostile world with no tools and a ten-minute countdown until nightfall. Success requires immediate resource gathering before the first mobs spawn at dusk.

You play as Steve, Alex, or 7 other default characters, spawning in the middle of nowhere with only your hands to rely on. That short window before darkness turns the opening moments into a high-pressure test, especially in survival mode, and even more so in hardcore mode.

Wood Is Your First True Currency

The first and the most important resource for you as soon as you load into a new world is wood. Even though you don't possess a weapon, you can farm wood from trees with your arms. Collecting wood is key to your survival.

Find the nearest tree and quickly collect as much wood as possible. Break the wood logs you collect into wood planks by placing the logs in the 2x2 crafting area.

Once you create planks, use four planks to create a crafting table. Place the crafting table near you and use it to create sticks by placing two planks vertically.

Use three planks in the top row and two sticks down the middle to craft a wooden pickaxe. Use the wooden pickaxe to farm cobblestone and upgrade your weaponry, replacing the wooden tools with cobblestone.

Let There Be Light!

Minecraft mobs spawn in darkness. The only way to ensure you don't have to fight an unending horde of mobs during nightfall is to cover nearby areas with light.

For that, you need coal or charcoal, which you can farm using the wooden pickaxe. Blocks with black spots contain coal. If you can't find such blocks, you have to take the hard route.

Create a furnace with 8 cobblestones and use logs in both slots of the furnace to create charcoal. Once you collect enough coal or charcoal, combine one of them with one stick to create a torch.

Illuminate nearby areas by placing torches. Keep a few extra torches on you at all times.

Food Is Thy Medicine

In the survival mode, the player spawns with a hunger and a health bar. The food bar will continue to go down every few moments and will need replenishment. If it drops severely, it starts affecting the health bar. Maintaining the hunger bar is essential to preventing health depletion.

There are multiple ways to replenish the food bar. Early on, the easiest way to find food is to farm animals in the surrounding area. Animals will yield raw meat, which has to be cooked in the furnace before eating or can be eaten raw.

If you are in an area without many animals, you can gather seeds from grass and create your own farm to grow food. Trees occasionally drop apples when cut down in their entirety which can also act as a food source.

Always remember to keep extra food on you when wandering in the Minecraft world.

Shelter and Survival

The final step is to build a shelter. Several players use the short route. The easiest way to build a temporary shelter is by digging straight down and then covering the area above with dirt again.

If you are afraid of the darkness around you, you can hold a torch in your hand. Survive the first night, and then go about your business building a proper shelter when the sun comes up.

For players who want to build a real shelter straight away, use the freely available dirt or crafted planks to build a simple structure, with most users opting for a 4x4 or 5x5 one in the beginning.

A good move to make nightfall end instantly is by going to sleep. For that, you need to farm wool from sheep and then use the crafting table, placing three wool with three planks to craft a bed. It is recommended that the wool blocks are the same color.

When nightfall arrives, just hop on the bed, and the game will move to sunrise almost instantly.

Prioritizing these essential resources ensures a safe transition to the second day.
