Sony’s June 2026 State of Play left fans divided despite showing off two of the generation’s biggest announcements yet. While God of War and Wolverine impressed, the lack of surprise reveals didn't impress everyone.
The most common sentiment across social media and gaming communities about the showcase was "good, but not great."
The quality of the games on display earned appreciation, and Sony focused on projects arriving within the next year. God of War: Laufey and Marvel’s Wolverine emerged as the clear headliners.
Power Unlimited columnist Genki posted their verdict about the State of Play on X. "I give the PlayStation State of Play a 7.5/10!" read the caption.
The disappointment among fans stemmed from expectations built before the show. These were shaped by months of leaks, speculations, and wishlist predictions.
Fans Were Split Between Praise for God of War and Frustration Over Missing Reveals
One fan commented, "7.5 is fair. I'd give it a 8/10. There's at least 6 games that are day one for me," on Genki's post. Another fan said, "Wolverine gameplay and God of War Laufey in one show, solid 7.5."
This fan described the whole event by saying, "Started strong with Wolverine had a couple cool reveals(Unseen game, Until Dawn 2 and No rest for wicked console release finally) and ended hype with new God of War(no release date?) Besides Wolverine not much else to play till next year from First party I’m interested in."
Sony's announcement of special screenings for the June State of Play had many fans expecting even more flagship projects.
This fan said, "I was hoping for a classic revival like Sly Cooper 4. Sony has so many IPs that they put on the shelf. They need to dust some off."
Ahead of the show, there were rumors that Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3, Kingdom Hearts 4, Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic, and other unannounced projects may get revealed.
The second fan said, "0/10 from me. I am semi care about onimusha, wolverine, but seriously we know where the hype goes to, and it is not there."
