Guerrilla Games' Co-Founder to Challenge Epic Games' Unreal Engine With New AI-Powered Engine

Epic Games has dominated the gaming industry with the Unreal Engine powering major games across the industry. A former Epic Games veteran believes Europe is getting ready with an answer of its own.

Guerrilla Games co-founder and former technical director at Epic Games, Arjan Brussee, has revealed that he is working on a startup to develop a new game engine called the “Immense Engine.”

Speaking on the Dutch podcast De Technoloog, he said:

"No one is currently making an engine that is fully European-hosted, built by Europeans, and complies with European rules and guidelines. Creating usable 3D worlds is becoming increasingly important, certainly for purposes other than just gaming."

According to player.one, this project is getting instant hype because of Brussee’s gaming resume. Before co-founding Guerrilla Games in 2003, he worked on Epic’s Jazz Jackrabbit series during the 1990s.

Later, he helped lead the Killzone developer before spending years at Epic Games. He also worked directly on Unreal Engine development and product management during that time. He also co-founded Boss Key Productions alongside Cliff Bleszinski.

According to Brussee, it is not going to be just another game development toolkit. The platform is being made with “full integration of AI” from the ground up.

It will not rely heavily on menu-based workflows and monolithic systems like traditional engines. Instead, it aims to use modular AI agents that can handle different development tasks independently.

According to Brussee, the engine is not being built just for games. He believes it could also be useful for areas like defense simulations, logistics, and creating massive 3D environments.

There is still no word on when Immense Engine will launch. But if the project succeeds, it could become one of the few real competitors to Unreal Engine in the modern market.

AI Integration Could Become the Biggest Difference Between Immense and Unreal Engine

Brussee says existing engines like Unreal still follow workflows that were designed years ago, with developers constantly moving through menus and editor tools to make changes.

Immense is being built around a different idea. Instead of depending heavily on traditional editor systems, Brussee wants AI agents to handle parts of the development process. He believes that could allow smaller teams to do work that usually requires much larger studios.

Companies like Electronic Arts, Square Enix, and Krafton are already investing in AI-assisted development tools. Brussee’s comments come at a time when players remain skeptical about AI being used in game development.

That does not seem to concern Brussee much, though. From the way he describes it, AI is not just another feature inside Immense Engine. It is the foundation the entire project is being built around.
