GTA 6's new PS5 tagline sparks fan debate over marketing deal

Sony and Rockstar Games have intensified their GTA 6 marketing push ahead of the game's November launch. However, one marketing tagline has become the center of all attention.

The phrase "Plays Best on PS5" was first used in PlayStation's pre-order campaign. But now that same phrase has been featured in Rockstar's own promotional material and on the official GTA 6 website. This has prompted speculation about the companies' reported marketing partnership.

"All PlayStation accounts are now marketing GTA 6 with the tagline 'Plays Best on PS5.' That marketing deal with Rockstar must’ve cost them hundreds of millions," GTA 6 Countdown posted on X.

The game is still launching simultaneously on PS5 and XBOX Series X/S. But the branding has divided fans over what it really means.

The tagline is now visible on Rockstar's official GTA 6 website through PlayStation promotional links and is featured in Rockstar's own advertisements for the game.

The latest promotional graphic encourages players to pre-order GTA 6 on PlayStation 5, thanks to the PS5 tagline. On the other hand, XBOX branding is absent from the advertisement for the game, which is launching on that platform as well.

Sony has previously defended the tagline. As per the company, GTA 6 "plays best on PS5" because of the console's immersive features, including DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, Tempest 3D Audio, and fast SSD loading.

The tagline also follows an unusually aggressive PlayStation marketing campaign. Sony has rebranded its PlayStation App with GTA 6 artwork and added a custom GTA 6 animation to the PS5 Welcome screen. It also gave the game prominent placement across the PlayStation Store.

Several reports have noted that Sony has rarely devoted this level of platform-wide promotion to a third-party title. This is something fans have never seen, even in PlayStation's first-party titles.

Fans remain split over what Rockstar's PS5 branding actually means

There was no hint of doubt that fans were going to be frustrated over this one-sided marketing tagline. It was understandable when Sony used it. But things completely changed when Rockstar started hitting the same notes. Here is how the fans reacted:

This fan stated, "Yet cannot even offer 60fps in our current 2026 without having to choose between performance or quality mode."

Another fan is actually surprised, as they said, "It's crazy how much they're doing for a game that isn't even one of their exclusives while not doing nearly this much for their actual exclusives."

One fan doubted the capabilities of the console as they said, "And apparently it's not getting 60FPS lol."

This fan has asked a question: "PlayStation has marketing rights, so why would you advertise for the other guys?"

GTA 6 is launching on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X/S.
