Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick finally provides the clearest picture of where GTA 6 stands after years of silence, leaks, and shifting timelines.
GTA 6 is officially scheduled to release on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is still no confirmation about a PC version yet.
On a podcast with David Senra, Zelnick admitted that Take-Two is roughly "18 months behind" where it was initially supposed to be, suggesting Rockstar's ambitions for the project far exceeded what was initially planned, considering the size and detail already visible in the game's trailers.
Rockstar has already confirmed that the game is set in Leonida, a fictional state inspired by modern-day Florida. Vice City is making a return as one of the game's main locations as well. However, it does look larger and more detailed than the original GTA game.
The story follows dual protagonists Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, with Caminos becoming the first-ever female protagonist in the series. Rockstar has not revealed deeper story details, but the protagonists' relationship appears important to the narrative direction.
Industry analysts expect the title to become one of the most significant gaming launches in history, driven largely by the success of GTA 5.
Strauss Zelnick Explains Why GTA 6 Is Being Treated Differently
Zelnick went on to explain why Take-Two views Grand Theft Auto differently from almost every other gaming franchise.
When asked whether Grand Theft Auto is the most successful gaming franchise ever made, Zelnick said, “Most people believe it’s the most valuable entertainment IP ever created.”
He also declined to comment about GTA 5's total revenue, simply saying, "it's a lot."
This value dictates the cautious development approach for the sequel.
GTA 5 is one of the most successful entertainment products ever released commercially. It has generated billions through GTA Online, game sales, and continued support across multiple console generations.
Zelnick’s comments suggest that Take-Two views Grand Theft Auto as one of the company’s most important long-term assets, especially with GTA 6 expected to become the franchise’s biggest launch yet.
Rockstar has not revealed an extended gameplay footage or many of the core gameplay details yet. However, based on the information confirmed so far, GTA 6 remains one of the most anticipated games currently in development.
