God of War Director Says More Kratos-Centric Games Are Planned

Santa Monica Studio recently confirmed that the God of War’s journey is far from over. While a new protagonist takes the lead, future projects will return to the franchise’s iconic hero.

Following a new chapter in the God of War series, the story centers around Faye, Kratos' wife, and is set around the same time as the events of God of War (2018). Though Kratos makes a brief appearance in the gameplay shown during the PS State of Play, there is a chance he may not be in the game for most of it.

After the 2026 State of Play, Santa Monica Studio's Head of Creative, Cory Barlog, informed fans that they'll always have stories about the God of War himself.

“There’s always going to be games about Kratos (and) we’re super excited about that,” he said during an interview with game director Ariel Lawrence.

This should reassure fans that God of War Laufey is not replacing Kratos or the main series, and that Santa Monica Studio still plans to tell more stories centered on the iconic character.

The official Santa Monica Studio X page also chimed in on the question.

"Kratos is the God of War – we have many more stories to tell with him. For now, we’re excited to take fans on a journey into the afterlife of the gods with Faye and hope you’ll come along for the ride!" the studio said in response to a post.

Barlog noted that Faye's story is part of a grand scheme. Santa Monica Studio views this journey as one chapter in an expanding multi-character narrative.

This isn't the first time Santa Monica Studio has taken Kratos' character and world in new directions. God of War (2018) and Ragnarok both explored his relationship with his son, Atreus.

Kratos' modern depiction shifted his outlook from that of a rage-fueled demigod to a father and mentor. While Santa Monica Studio hinted that there are more stories involving Kratos, the current focus remains on the Faye-led title.

Fans may not be used to Faye's character being front and center. However, they may enjoy the new game regardless, given its atmosphere and combat.

Original Creator Expresses Displeasure With God of War Laufey

David Jaffe, who directed the original God of War, spoke harshly about the State of Play reveal. He did not find the 20-minute footage memorable in any way.

Though he told his viewers that he'll obviously play the game, the game designer also felt that it won't sell enough copies to make the money the studio needs.

"I think it’s terrible… I don’t think it’s going to sell what they need it to sell,” Jaffe said during a livestream.

While Jaffe was critical of the reveal, his opinion represents only one perspective on the game's new direction. He has previously been critical of God of War: Ragnarok and the way Kratos' character evolved in the modern franchise.
