Santa Monica Studio revealed God of War Laufey at the PlayStation State of Play, placing the spinoff parallel to the 2018 Norse saga.
While Kratos remains the face of the franchise, director Ariel Lawrence confirmed this entry focuses on Faye’s journey through the afterlife realm of Everywhen.
The game's director, Ariel Lawrence, explained that choosing Faye was never about replacing Kratos. Instead, the team wanted to explore a character who had already shaped much of the Norse saga from the shadows.
"We’ll always tell stories about Kratos, but I think for us, it was just a chance to talk about somebody who was so pivotal to the beginning," Lawrence said in the interview.

"To get to know them and push beyond into this new world, and give us some place to be surprised and see how things connect. So for us, it's not a departure; it's more of an expansion," she added.
As per the studio, God of War Laufey starts immediately after Faye’s body is burned on the funeral pyre seen at the opening of 2018’s God of War. The story unfolds in parallel with the events of God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarök.
In this parallel timeline, Faye awakens in the Everywhen, the afterlife realm for gods. Here she discovers that the plans she set in motion to protect Kratos and Atreus may be in danger.
Santa Monica Studio’s Head of Creative, Cory Barlog, also confirmed that everything happening in Laufey runs alongside the events of the Norse saga and directly connects to the wider universe.
The Everywhen and its unusual cast could reshape God of War’s future
Everywhen is one of the most intriguing aspects of the upcoming game. The realm is the birthplace and endpoint of all magic.
Not only the Norse legends, but this place also brings together gods and creatures from multiple mythologies.
That is why Faye will face the Egyptian deity Sekhmet and the Mongolian war god Begtse on her journey. This again suggests that Santa Monica Studio is now looking beyond a single mythological setting.
Apart from them, two unusual companions will join Faye. One of them is a cosmic cube, Phranque. Another one is Rue, an enchanted ribbon guardian.
Just like the new settings, the gameplay will have new effects as well. Unlike the previous installments, God of War Laufey is not about a heavier combat style. Instead, Faye relies on speed, agility, aerial movement, and soul-based magic.
