God of War Creator Makes Negative Prediction For Upcoming Laufey Game

David Jaffe wasn't impressed with the latest God of War spinoff. Following a lengthy gameplay reveal of God of War: Laufey, the series creator expressed his disapproval on a live stream.

God of War: Laufey is going to be another mainline entry for the franchise, but it's a spinoff starring Kratos' wife, Faye.

"The God of War thing, though. If it wasn't called God of War, this feels like one of those trailers that someone has to remind you about, and then you're like, 'Oh yeah I remember that's kind of cool.'" said Jaffe.

"It's God of War… I'm not hyped for it, but of course I'm going to play it, and I'm going to stream it and talk about it… I think it's terrible... I don't think it's going to sell what they need it to sell," he added.

The PS5-exclusive adventure follows Faye after her death as she navigates the Everywhen. This is the afterlife where gods from multiple mythologies collide. However, according to Jaffe, he needs to "know the backstory of this f****** thing."

Jaffe's comment aligns with other criticisms he made during the stream. He compared Laufey with Forspoken and stated that it felt more like a generic fantasy adventure than a traditional God of War title.

He also questioned whether the project originated from a desire to create a new fantasy IP before the developers adapted it into the God of War universe.

However, Jaffe did acknowledge that some combat sequences looked promising. Still, his overall assessment remained unchanged.

David Jaffe previously criticized another God of War project

This is not the first time any God of War title has faced the wrath of its creator. Earlier this year, David Jaffe strongly criticized God of War: Sons of Sparta. This is a side-scrolling spinoff developed by Mega Cat Studios.

After playing the game for some time, Jaffe instantly declared, "This is not God of War." He also repeatedly argued that it failed to capture the identity of the series.

Much of that criticism came because of the game's tone, storytelling, and the younger version of Kratos. As per Jaffe, the concept would crumble if the God of War branding were removed.

Now, the same argument reflects on the comments on God of War: Laufey.

In both cases, Jaffe's core complaint is the same. According to him, newer projects are moving too far away from the themes, mythology, and identity that originally defined the franchise.
