GCML’s Guide on How to Get Max Gear in Minecraft

Minecraft players looking to conquer the endgame must prioritize obtaining certain resources and specific enchantment tiers. Reaching the maximum gear level requires a strategic combination of XP-based repairs and damage-reduction modifiers.

What is the Maximum Level of Gear?

In weapons and tools, Diamond is the highest in the normal biome. However, once players get access to Nether and can collect it, Netherite becomes the highest tier of tools possible for us to craft.

Apart from the crafting, you can increase the effectiveness of your tools with enchantments. Different tools gain maximum effectiveness through a varied combination of enchantments.

Armor

Armor has varied parts, with different enchantment combinations applicable for helmets, chestplates, leggings, and boots.

Helmet

  • Protection IV
  • Mending
  • Unbreaking III
  • Respiration III
  • Aqua Affinity
  • Optional: Thorns III

via. Mojang Studios

Protection IV is the highest level of protection enchantment and helps you absorb more damage. Mending and Unbreaking III go hand-in-hand. Unbreaking III increases durability while Mending uses your collected XP to repair the damage dealt to the helmet during combat.

Respiration III and Aqua Affinity are helpful when traversing through aquatic biomes. Thorns III adds a knockback effect, which can prove useful, but only against fellow players and is hence not an essential enchantment.

Chestplate

  • Mending
  • Protection IV
  • Unbreaking III
  • Optional: Thorns III

Similarly, the same applies to chestplates. Respiration and Aqua Affinity aren't essential when it comes to the chestplate.

Leggings

  • Mending
  • Protection IV
  • Unbreaking III
  • Optional: Thorns III

Boots

  • Mending
  • Protection IV
  • Unbreaking III
  • Feather Falling IV
  • Depth Strider III
  • Optional: Soul Speed III
  • Optional: Thorns III

Feather Falling IV is the highest level of the enchantment, which reduces fall damage, making it the most important enchantment for Boots. Depth Strider III increases movement speed underwater. And while Soul Speed III is not essential, we recommend adding it as it helps you move in the Nether World much faster.

These Armor combinations are designed to protect you against creeper explosions, combat damage, fall damage, and everything as you prepare to battle the Ender Dragon.

Weapons and Tools

Weapons such as the Sword, Pickaxe, and Bow and Arrow also need to be maxed out before fighting the Ender Dragon.

Sword

  • Sharpness V
  • Looting III
  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending
  • Sweeping Edge III (Java only)
  • Optional: Fire Aspect II
  • Optional: Knockback II

Sharpness V is the best damage enhancer available. Unbreaking III and Mending do the same job they do for Armor items. Looting III increases mob drops and helps you collect more from the same process.

Only available in the Java Edition, Sweeping Edge adds a splash effect, basically dealing damage to nearby enemies during your attacks.

Knockback II can be taken literally to allow you to knock your enemies back upon connecting your sword. Meanwhile, Fire Aspect II has the ability to set your enemies on fire upon contact, dealing increased damage over time.

Pickaxe

Ideally, you should have two pickaxes in your inventory because the Fortune and Silk Touch effects are incompatible.

Fortune Pickaxe

  • Efficiency V
  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending
  • Fortune III

Fortune III increases ore yields, meaning you can mine diamonds and other important materials faster. Efficiency V helps you mine incredibly fast, sometimes instantly as well.

Silk Touch Pickaxe

  • Efficiency V
  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending
  • Silk Touch

While everything else remains the same, Silk Touch allows you to mine direct blocks instead of the drops, removing the extra step of crafting the blocks.

While many decide on one or the other, having both pickaxes maximizes your efficiency, especially late-game.

Bows: Infinity Bow

  • Power V
  • Flame
  • Punch II
  • Unbreaking III
  • Infinity

Power V increases the damage dealt by arrows to the maximum possible level. Flame will set the arrows on fire, and Punch II adds a knockback effect upon contact.

Infinity removes the need for arrows, making the number of arrows available at your disposal infinite.

Mending Bow

  • Power V
  • Flame
  • Punch II
  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending

Mending makes the Bow unbreakable, but you have to constantly worry about running out of arrows.

Hence, two different Bows can be carried to maximize your gear efficiency.

Crossbows: Multishot Crossbow

  • Quick Charge III
  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending
  • Multishot

via. Mojang Studios

Quick Charge allows you to fire your crossbow faster, and Multishot enables you to fire three arrows at once.

Piercing Crossbow

  • Quick Charge III
  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending
  • Piercing IV

Piercing IV lets arrows pierce through enemies and shields, then recollect them.

Shield

  • Unbreaking III
  • Mending

Shield only needs durability enchantments, and hence, the two best ones to increase the durability are recommended.

These are the maximum levels of gears needed to beat the Ender Dragon and complete the game. However, some users want to go beyond and collect the maximum level of gears possible.

In such cases, players can defeat the Ender Dragon and then get their hands on Elytra. Add Unbreaking III and Mending to make it more durable, and you now have one of the best transportation methods at your disposal.

Tridents, Shovels, Firework Rockets, Shulker Boxes, and Axes can also be crafted and kept in inventory. However, these aren't as essential and are optional items you can carry.

But for maximum efficiency, you need space in your inventory too, making these last-choice items if you have spare slots left.
