15 Video Game Moms We Should Celebrate This Mother's Day

Video game stories are shifting toward the complexities of parenthood. This Mother's Day, we highlight 15 iconic matriarchs who anchor their narratives through resilience and sacrifice.

Elena Fisher (Uncharted 4: A Thief's End)

Elena Fisher is living proof that adventure doesn't end with motherhood. She is an investigative journalist and adventurer, just like her husband, Nathan Drake.

The Uncharted 4 epilogue, where Elena and Nathan settle down with their daughter, Cassie, is the perfect wholesome ending to an otherwise dangerous journey.

Saga Anderson (Alan Wake 2)

Alan Wake 2 protagonist Saga Anderson embodies motherhood, with her bond with her daughter Logan serving as an emotional anchor as her reality is rewritten against her will.

Saga often uses Logan's photo as a tether to remain focused during difficult investigations. Logan is Saga's light as darkness encases her current reality.

Yennefer of Vengerberg (The Witcher 3)

Yennefer proves that blood relations are not the only bonds that can be strong. Yennefer's bond with her unnamed biological mother, only caused trauma.

But it does not define her. When Yennefer meets Ciri, she gives her the motherly love and protection she wishes her mother had given her.

Mom (Animal Crossing)

While Mom is just an NPC in Animal Crossing, her constant letters and random stories always reassure the player while they are far from home.

People see this as an effort from a mother to communicate with them while also assuring them that she is safe and always present.

Mom (Pokémon)

Three things are constant in Pokémon: the main character always gets into trouble, a worried professor, and the player's mother who always comes to greet them goodbye before they venture on a new journey in every edition.

In-game, the player's mother is more than just supportive of her child's mission to "Catch 'Em All."

In almost every Pokémon game, the mother heals the entire party when the player returns home and is always seen giving them essential items like Running Shoes or a Town Map.

Freya (God of War)

Freya represents all real-life mothers in God of War. Driven by the fear of a prophecy, Freya renders her son Baldur unable to feel anything. In return, he gains invulnerability to physical and magical threats because of the Vanir spell she casts.

Baldur's inability to break the spell turns him into a resentful monster who hates Freya for taking away his ability to feel, yet despite his attempts to kill her, Freya never fights back and is devastated when Kratos kills Baldur to end his torment.

Lady Dimitrescu (Resident Evil Village)

In Resident Evil Village, Lady Alcina Dimitrescu is not just a towering figure tormenting players. As the mother of three daughters, Bela, Cassandra, and Daniela, Lady Dimitrescu cares for them and provides food (villagers) for them to feed upon.

While not her biological daughters, she ensures they continue receiving a steady supply of food and protects them from players who come to harm them.

Toriel (Undertale)

The fanbase does not call just anyone "Goat Mom." Having lost several children in the Underground, Toriel teaches players to survive with mercy instead of violence.

Caretaker of the Ruins, Toriel is known for her Butterscotch-Cinnamon Pies and her love for terrible puns as she aspires to be a teacher.

Nyx (Hades)

While Zagreus is not Nyx's biological son, she struck a deal with the Fates to revive him after he was stillborn and raised him with motherly love, simply telling him, "It is because I love you. You may not be born of me, but I raised you like one of my own."

Clementine (The Walking Dead)

Clementine's journey from being the one needing protection in the first season to taking on the role of a mentor to young AJ, similar to what Lee Everett did for her, is quite endearing.

The final test mirrors her childhood trauma, with Clementine about to turn, and young AJ having to decide to do the "right thing."

Mama (Cooking Mama)

Mama is not just a mother but also a life coach. Her words of encouragement and positivity echo throughout the game's journey.

Every time a player cooks perfectly, Cooking Mama shouts, "Even better than Mama," showing her loving nature as she teaches everything from cooking to growing vegetables and flowers while even taking on the role of a caregiver.

Ness' Mom (Earthbound)

Ness' Mom is an essential part of the game's journey. She is the only way to cure Ness' homesickness, with her warm meals and cooking raising his fighting spirit.

Sonya Blade (Mortal Kombat)

Mother to Cassie Cage, Sonya Blade paves the way for her daughter and trains Cassie to become a soldier first and a daughter later.

Ana (Overwatch)

A legendary sniper, Ana's character is defined by her duty toward the Elite Task Force and her love for her daughter, Fareeha (Pharah).

Initially discouraging Pharah from joining Overwatch, Ana leaves her daughter devastated after news of her passing, but the two eventually reconnect and fight side by side after Pharah learns she is still alive.

Joyce Price (Life Is Strange)

The hardworking mother of Chloe Price, Joyce becomes the backbone of her family after her husband, William, passes away in a car accident.

Caught between Chloe and David Madsen, whom Chloe sees as an intruder, she is eventually forced to choose between saving Arcadia Bay or her daughter.

Games like Alan Wake 2 and God of War Ragnarok have shown how modern storytelling in gaming now puts greater focus on family and parental relationships instead of relying only on action-driven narratives.

Many upcoming sequels and expansions are expected to continue exploring themes like family, protection, and parenthood as games move toward more emotional and character-focused storytelling.
