Fans Slam First Look at Kratos and Atreus in Upcoming God of War Series

Feb 28, 2026, 1:30 PM CUT

The first look at Amazon's 'God of War' series has arrived, but the reception is far from heroic. After photos of the live-action Kratos and Atreus were released, fans immediately voiced their displeasure online, sparking widespread debate.

It all started when photos were shared by the official God of War X account with the caption:

"Father and Son. Behold your first look at Kratos and Atreus in the God of War series now in production for @primevideo. Their journey to the highest peak begins."

The photo showed Callum Vinson as Atreus, with Ryan Hurst as Kratos watching on. The image looked like it was from the first few hours of the game, when the father-son duo went hunting, looking nearly identical to a still from the game.

The series will follow the same setup as the game, where Kratos tries to raise his son after his mother's passing. The underlying theme behind the series is that Kratos tries to teach his son to become a better god, while Atreus teaches him to be a better human.

And while fans will watch for the plot, the first look hasn't left them feeling positive.

God of War Faces Immense Backlash

As soon as the photos were released, fans flooded the comments section with their reviews. Sadly, most of the response was negative.

One X user expressed his discontent with a direct comment, "Please tell me this guy ain't Jim Hopper." This fan thought the version of Kratos played by Hurst looked less like Kratos and felt similar to the Stranger Things character. Interestingly, Hurst voiced another character in the game, Thor. His casting as Kratos was a massive surprise.

That's why another one commented, "Triple H was the perfect person to play Kratos!" giving hype to the 2022 news where Triple H was among the top contenders pitched by fans to play Kratos. One user tried to blame it on AI, writing, "I thought it was AI, but it’s not…"

A user made a joke on the trend of video games being adapted into TV series by writing, "Kratos survived Greek gods, Norse gods, and now he has to survive a streaming adaptation. The hardest battle yet."

Now this isn't the first video-game adaptation that hasn't been liked by fans. Remember when the Borderlands adaptation came out? Fans had similar reactions at the time as well.

One user even tried to give the production team some tips with the comment, "Y'all...I was excited about this. Please fix that beard, it's so bad. At the VERY LEAST, fix that beard." One of the biggest upsets is the difference is Kratos' beard. It was a look fans had come to love but this version felt dissimilar to the game.
