A rumor claiming Microsoft has considered a Destiny 2-style Halo MMO is making the rounds on Reddit, though many fans are already dismissing it as unlikely. The discussion comes as XBOX prepares to launch Halo: Campaign Evolved.
The rumor was shared on social media platform X by user HiddenXperia, who categorized the chance of it being real as 0.00000007%.
According to Reddit user HTD_Blog, who cited someone in a position privy to such information, Obsidian tabled the idea of a Halo MMO in the vein of Destiny 2, an idea that former CEO Phil Spencer encouraged.
The gameplay would involve playing as a soldier, just like in Halo 3: ODST, who would have to go on quests across different planets, dungeons, PvP, and raids.
Even the Reddit user has asked for the rumor to be taken with a "grain of salt," which points to the idea of it coming to fruition still being a distant reality.
'99.8% likely to be fake' - Fans Refuse To Believe Reddit Post
A Halo MMO would align with XBOX's push to monetize legacy franchises. However, fans were quick to dismiss the claim as little more than a rumor.
"It’s like 99.8% likely to be fake, but then again Halo 4 did get leaked on a VHS tape in a barn iirc xD," one fan clarified.
While many comments dismiss the rumor as fake, some fans point to the infamous Halo 4 barn leak. Before 343 Industries officially revealed the game, a poorly recorded video showing Halo 4 running on a development Xbox 360 surfaced online, becoming one of the Halo community's most famous memes.
Others are more wishful, though. One fan hoped, "HALO STUDIOS GIVE ME A HALO MMO LIKE DESTINY AND MY LIFE IS YOURS."
With XBOX moving on from Destiny 2 and fans still interested in that style of experience, a Halo MMO could help capitalize on that demand while giving Halo fans a new way to engage with the franchise.
Some, though, dismissed the rumor on a rather interesting technicality.
"Seems fake cause there's no way they'd make you play as some Marine or ODST as opposed to a Spartan," someone pointed out.
HiddenXperia acknowledged the fan's logic, a valid point that only adds to the skepticism surrounding the rumor.
If a Halo MMO ever happens, limiting players to a soldier role could disappoint fans who would likely expect multiple playable options across the Halo universe. However, Microsoft has not commented on the rumor, and no official plans for such a project have been announced.
