Everything You Should Know About Axolotls in Minecraft: A Comprehensive Guide

Minecraft has several mobs spawning depending on the type of biome your seed generates. Axolotls were one of the mobs added after the release of the original and have quickly become a fan favorite because of their vibrancy and behavior.

Commonly found in biomes with massive water bodies, we will go through everything about Axolotls in Minecraft comprehensively here, from their types, colors, and every other action.

What are Axolotls?

Axolotls are aquatic mobs found in the Lush Caves biome and were added to Minecraft in the Caves & Cliffs update. Axolotls are passive mobs, which means they are not hostile, so players don't have to fear being attacked by them.

Instead, Axolotls help fight against other aquatic hostile mobs and even grant temporary regeneration after it.

Where & How to find Axolotls?

You need to find Lush Caves to locate Axolotls in your biome. Remember, they are commonly found roaming water bodies in groups of 4 to 6.

Search surrounding areas for swamps, azalea trees, glow berries, and spore blossoms, and a combination of them. Stay below sea level to increase your chance of finding Axolotls. Search for water bodies with clay around them, as it indicates underwater areas where Axolotls usually spawn.

Axolotls' Unique Characteristics

While Axolotls can only survive for 5 minutes away from water bodies, they can stay alive indefinitely in rainy weather and during thunderstorms.

Axolotls have only 14 health points and are incredibly weak against Tridents enchanted with the Impaling effect.

Axolotls take rapid tick damage when interacting with fire-related items in Minecraft, such as Fire, Magma Blocks, and Lava.

When left alone on land, Axolotls will start searching for water bodies, ignoring hazardous biome items like Lava and other things in their paths. This leaves them prone to taking damage from these interactions or, worse, getting eliminated.

Axolotl Colors

Commonly found in four natural colors, you can see Axolotls flaunting colors, such as Lucy Pink, Wild Brown, Gold Yellow, and a Cyan Light Blue, all having an equal 25% chance of spawning.

However, a fifth, Blue variant is also found, but is extremely rare. Blue Axolotls can only be created through breeding, with the baby having a 1 in 1200 chance of emerging blue.

Taming and Breeding Axolotls

Axolotls cannot actually be tamed. But you can pick up an Axolotl with a water bucket by right-clicking on the Axolotl, ensuring it doesn't despawn.

Axolotls cannot survive for longer than 5 minutes on land and will automatically navigate towards water bodies to save themselves.

Axolotls need to be fed buckets of tropical fish to start the breeding process. Tropical fish will not set it off, as the food item needs to be in the bucket form.

Love Mode gets activated, resulting in a baby that has an equal chance of inheriting either parent's color, unless you hit the 1 in 1200 chance for blue.

Babies will grow in 20 minutes. But feeding them buckets of tropical fish will make them grow a little bit faster.

Axolotls seem to be mostly bred to build or expand players' aquatic farms. But the main reason is the search for the blue-colored Axolotl.

A basic aquatic farm layout is sufficient for Axolotls. Covering the area with enough lighting to prevent hostile mobs from spawning also helps.

Axolotls and Combat in Minecraft

Firstly, Axolotls are passive mobs and do not attack players. But they are aggressive against underwater mobs and can be used to battle Drowned, Guardians, Elder Guardians, and Squid and Glow Squid, all of whom they will start attacking automatically.

Whenever an axolotl defeats or assists in defeating a hostile mob, it grants players a short regenerative buff that can sometimes help them survive and clear out underwater areas without resorting to food breaks.

Axolotls have a unique mechanism wherein they start acting as if they are already eliminated when taking some damage. This causes hostile mobs to stop their fire, which gives Axolotls enough time to recover.

If you have enough Axolotls, you can bring them to underwater raids, as they swarm enemies, giving players enough time to go about their attacks and raids properly.

Always carry a bucket of water while taking Axolotls to raids or other explorations because of their small shelf life without being near a water body.
