After the unprecedented success of 'A Minecraft Movie', Warner Bros. has confirmed that a sequel is in the works, and Minecraft fans will be treated to more progression in the storyline.
But as Twitchcon Europe 2026 in Rotterdam had a special edition of Minecraft Live where Mojang revealed more details, we learned that the sequel will serve fans new adventures, new biomes, and also a more direct connection to the Minecraft lore.
Here, we take a closer look at the who, what, and when of the sequel.
The Sequel Name
Twitchcon Europe 2026 saw Minecraft release details about the sequel. The second movie in this universe will be named 'A Minecraft Movie Squared',
While it naturally translates to Minecraft 2, it teases an algebraic connection in the sequel.
The Release Date for
'A Minecraft Movie Squared' will hit theatres worldwide on July 23, 2027, with production already having begun to make the sequel to a commercial hit.
The Cast
Jack Black returns as Steve, usually the protagonist of the Minecraft universe, in the sequel. Jason Momoa will also reprise his role as Garrett 'The Garbage Man' Garrison, a former gaming champion and a present-day store owner who is pulled into the Minecraft universe.
Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, and Matt Berry are also confirmed to be returning. And while Brooks and Coolidge are expected to play their respective characters, Dawn and Marlene, in the sequel, Matt Berry is expected to have a much larger role.
In the first part, Berry played the role of a Nitwit again, a Minecraft villager who had a rom-com-style arc with Marlene after arriving in the real world.
One new character set to be added in the sequel is Alex, with Kirsten Dunst confirmed to be playing the character.
Alex is the other protagonist and the female character choice available to users in Minecraft, and it will be intriguing to see how returning director Jared Hess portrays the Alex and Steve storyline.
The 'Herobrine' Rumor
Matt Berry being given a larger, undisclosed role is the genuine cause of this speculation. Herobrine is a myth in the Minecraft lore dating back to the 2010s.
He is described as a figure resembling a human Minecraft character with white glowing eyes that stalked players.
While not much is known about Herobrine, fans speculate that the character has supernatural powers, such as the ability to teleport, something Minecraft users can also do with Mods.
Mojang played into the myth and added the 'Herobrine' character into the Minecraft lore with the 'Removed Herobrine' as a patch note in one of the updates.
