Dead Space 4 will likely never be made, according to former producer Chuck Beaver. The developer has worked on all three Dead Space games and remains an integral part of the niche community.
During his recent appearance on the FRVR Podcast, the producer revealed that making Dead Space 4 would not be feasible because it would need to sell over 10 million copies.
“Horror games have a bit of a ceiling, you know, and I think the number back in [former EA VP] Frank Gibeau’s day was 5 million units to keep going on Dead Space,” said Beaver. “I think the number is like 15 million units now, given the cost of things.”
The producer believes that the franchise has a dedicated fan base. However, given the current cost of making another sequel, it's nearly impossible to make the game.
According to Beaver, these rising costs could not be justified without guaranteed high-volume sales. The franchise has sold several million copies over the years, but the numbers aren't enough for the developers to continue.
During an appearance on the Here's Johnny podcast some years ago, Beaver revealed that Dead Space 4 would have centered on the main character, Isaac, as an unreliable narrator.
This could have been an interesting twist on the storyline. The first two installments of the Dead Space series received highly positive feedback, while the third entry garnered mixed reviews.
Dead Space 4 Won’t Be Made Because of Low Sales Expectations
Dead Space was incredibly popular upon release. It received a Metacritic rating of 86 and above on all platforms. Electronic Arts CFO Eric Brown later revealed that it had sold one million copies worldwide. The figure may have grown ever since.
However, EA was somewhat disappointed with the sales figures, mainly due to the game's high development costs.
A similar story surrounds the sequel. Dead Space 2's level designer, Zach Wilson, had previously claimed that the game cost $60 million to make and market.
He further mentioned that companies like Sony and other retailers also got a percentage of the revenue generated from sales, further lowering the amount.
This cost, compared to its sales of 4 million copies, was yet again commercially disappointing. Finally, Dead Space 3 sold 605,000 copies in its very first month.
Though the final figure remains elusive, perhaps the sales weren't strong enough to guarantee the creation of Dead Space 4. Beaver compared this to the profit that the Resident Evil games continued to rake in.
“Any of the Resident Evils are selling around seven million [copies], that’s a pretty good number,” Chuck Beaver explained while on the FRVR Podcast.
“Like you can make that hunt for some amount of stuff. But, you know, companies now are looking for the next Fortnite. They need something that is a perennial moneymaker."
The producer also expressed disappointment at not being able to finish the game's story to its logical end.
