Destiny 2 Support Plans Reportedly Changed After Sony Buyout

Bungie confirmed Destiny 2’s final live-service update will arrive on June 9. The announcement marks the end of active development for the game after nearly a decade of support.

But newer reports now suggest the franchise’s plans changed after Sony acquired Bungie in 2022. What once looked like a gradual evolution for Destiny reportedly became a much broader shift behind the scenes.

As per more reports, Bungie actually wanted to keep Destiny alive through future projects and long-term support plans. But internal financial reassessments and changing priorities reportedly altered that direction.

A recent report from Bloomberg suggests that Bungie is now preparing for significant layoffs. The company is also lacking a greenlit successor project for the Destiny 2 team. At the same time, reports indicate Destiny 3 is not currently in active production.

This approach also makes Bungie’s official messaging around a “new beginning” stand out more. In its announcement, the studio said it would begin incubating future games.

The company also ensured that Destiny 2 will remain playable in the years ahead, similar to the original Destiny.

The studio had already gone through a difficult stretch before this. Sony previously disclosed major impairment charges tied to Bungie’s assets, while several reports pointed to weaker-than-expected performance across recent projects and changing expectations around live-service growth.

That's why The Final Shape may have become Destiny’s final chapter all along.

What comes next for Bungie after Destiny 2?

As of now, the clearest answer appears to be Marathon.

Multiple reports suggest Bungie's immediate priority is Marathon. The studio is looking to continue support and expansion of the game rather than another Destiny release.

Yes, internal pitches for future projects are reportedly there. Some of them are even connected to the Destiny universe. However, none are believed to have entered full production.

This uncertainty also puts a question mark on Bungie's identity. Sony acquired the studio for $3.6 billion partly to strengthen its live-service ambitions.

But that doesn't seem to be the case after Destiny's fate hangs by a thread.
