Games are immersive, and some can feel so real. While blurring the lines between reality and the screen can be harmful, it can sometimes prove to be a blessing and a source of comfort.
A 55-year-old Reddit user 'TheRealDuke77' shared his wholesome story on the platform, involving his late daughter McKenzie and the Pragmata game.
The user lost his daughter, McKenzie, because of a heart condition in 2009, when she was eight years old. In the comments, he explained how her illness eventually led to her demise.
According to the post, the Reddit user's daughter MxKenzie collapsed while playing outside. Despite being hospitalized, her condition did not improve. The eight-year-old passed away at the hospital six days later.
TheRealDuke77 revealed that he had been a gamer once, but hadn't played video games since his high school and college days almost thirty years ago. But his younger daughter, Ella, encouraged him to return to gaming in 2024.
The two enjoyed games like Hogwarts Legacy, Fortnite, and Red Dead Redemption 2 before coming across Capcom's Pragmata.
Ella noticed the similarity between Pragmata's character Diana and McKenzie, wondering, "Daddy, she reminds me of pictures of McKenzie. I wonder if Diana is like McKenzie?"
Her words had prompted TheRealDuke77 to buy the entire bundle, diving into Pragmata. He described the experience as therapeutic for his soul.
Pragmata is set in the near future on a lunar research station where a survivor, Hugh Williams, meets an android named Diana.
The storyline captures the unlikely partnership between the human and the android as they look to escape from the lunar research facility and reach the Earth-return Shuttle.
The user's heartfelt story of a virtual reunion with his late daughter moved users on Reddit and other social media platforms, including the Pragmata's game director, Cho Yong-hee.
Yong-hee took to X to express how he felt regarding the game's protagonist becoming an accidental tribute to McKenzie.
Game Director Cho Yong-hee acknowledges the heartfelt story
The story touched every heart, and Pragmata game director Cho Yong-hee was no different. Yong-hee has served as Art Director for iconic Capcom titles like the Resident Evil 3 remake. He was also a character artist for Resident Evil: Biohazard.
Cho Yong-hee is known for his long development periods for games and took his time with Pragmata. He responded to the story on the social media platform X, quote-tweeting the story shared by an X account called Emerald Apple.
He replied in Japanese, his native language, with the phrase roughly translating to "Thank you very much".
TheRealDuke77's story adds a rare personal ode to the Pragmata storyline. The resemblance between Diana and McKenzie serves as a profound testament to the game's character design and is a great compliment to the artists involved in the game's development
