Gruel is a food source in Conan Exiles. However, it serves a wide range of purposes in this survival game.
Gruel is one of the best early-game foods for your followers in Hyboria. Each piece of Gruel can burn for up to 72 seconds, making it a good option for the Wheel of Pain.
Mass-producing Gruel requires an efficient understanding of the crafting process.
Materials Required
You need plant fiber, seeds, and an additional fuel source like Coal or Wood. Also, you need to unlock a Campfire, though you can even use a Bonfire or a Large Campfire to prepare Gruel. Having no additional fuel source will cause the cooking station to burn the plant fiber as fuel instead.
Gather Plant Fiber and Seeds
Plant fiber can be harvested bare-handed or with a sickle from bushes. Seeds are incidental finds while harvesting plant fiber. Use a sickle to increase the chances of collecting seeds during the process.
The Cooking Process
You require 5x plant fiber and 1x seeds to be put into the cooking station, most commonly a Campfire, alongside Coal or Wood as fuel.
Press the triangle button shown at the top of the campfire to start the cooking process. One batch will yield 10 units of Gruel.
Storage
While many don't focus on Gruel's shelf life, the resource will turn into Spoiled Gruel if kept in your inventory for more than 1 hour and 20 minutes.
To prevent this, you need to store your Gruel in a preservation box. Once you add Ice to the preservation box, it stops the decay timer, meaning your Gruel does not age at all.
Additional Gruel Uses
While Gruel is normally consumed as a food source or treated as fuel, it has additional uses.
Firstly, feeding Gruel to an injured Thrall can heal up to 6 health points per second, making it a cheap alternative to the more efficient Exotic Feast.
Once you unlock a Stove and Specialist Cooking feats, you can actually combine Gruel with other ingredients.
Add Egg and Spice to Gruel to craft Enhanced Gruel, which can heal at almost the same rate as an Exotic Feast. Keeping Gruel in your inventory is risky because of its shelf life. However, adding Honey to the Gruel increases the shelf life to 45 hours.
Combining Dried Berries and 2 units of Spice with Gruel actually converts it into a useful food source for your character, as it increases hunger restoration while also marginally increasing the shelf life.
