CD Projekt Red Assigns Over Half Its Developers to The Witcher 4

It looks like CD Projekt Red has finally committed the majority of its resources to developing the next game in The Witcher Series. The studio has made The Witcher 4 its top priority, with over half of the development team assigned to work on the game.

CD Projekt Red currently has 975 employees on its payroll, and as per its latest staffing breakdown in April this year, 513 developers are assigned to the development of The Witcher 4, a number that has increased from 499 in February this year.

163 developers are assigned to Project Orion, the upcoming sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.  Others are maintaining and continuing the work on Cyberpunk 2077, especially after redeeming its reputation with subsequent updates and expansions. Other commitments include Project Sirius, Hadar, and other miscellaneous and shared projects and services.

The Witcher 4 has been CD Projekt Red's priority for a while now, steadily increasing the development team's size from around 400 developers in early 2025 to the current size of 513 employees dedicated to producing another successful Witcher game.

The Witcher 4 will mark the beginning of a new Witcher storyline and will be the first installment of a new trilogy arc where Ciri will be the primary protagonist. The game will also shift to Unreal Engine and will no longer be based on CD Projekt Red's old REDengine.

While there is still no clear timeline for a potential release date, CD Projekt Red's focus on The Witcher 4 is a positive sign that the game could be out in the coming two to three years.

CD Projekt Red Learning From Cyberpunk 2077 Launch Fiasco

Everyone knows what happened when the much-awaited and hyped Cyberpunk 2077 was released. A half-baked game with broken visuals and an incomplete storyline massively affected CD Projekt Red's reputation.

The studio came out with a heartfelt apology and then dedicated itself to redeeming the situation with quick bug fixes and regular updates.

The Phantom Liberty expansion salvaged Cyberpunk 2077, and the 163 developers still working on it show CD Projekt Red's dedication towards its titles.

The Witcher has a massively loyal fanbase and an audience that will be looking at The Witcher 4 with an even more stern lens than what Cyberpunk 2077 was treated to.

And CD Projekt Red is ensuring it doesn't repeat the situation or anything similar to what they experienced during Cyberpunk 2077's launch.
