Capcom has seen a lot of success with its recent games. Pragmata surpassed 1 million copies sold within two days of release, while Resident Evil Requiem became the fastest-selling title in the franchise's history. The company's President and COO, Haruhiro Tsujimoto, recently spoke about the formula behind that success.
He discussed how the company moved away from auteur-led games. These are games that are heavily dependent on a single developer and their ideas. A good example is the Death Stranding games created by Hideo Kojima.
“In the game industry, when a title becomes a series, it often ends up depending heavily on a particular developer, becoming what you’d call an individual-driven title,” Tsujimoto said in an interview with Famitsu.
“If that person doesn’t make one, there’s no next instalment. The direction of the series becomes tied to the ideas of a single creator,” he added.
“We discussed the issue with the central figures behind each franchise and ultimately agreed that we should abandon that approach.”
Capcom was home to several renowned developers, including Shinji Mikami of Resident Evil and Hideaki Itsuno of Dragon's Dogma. However, as these creators moved on, the company shifted toward a more team-based approach.
“We didn’t mind even if sales temporarily declined as a result, and by switching to a team-based approach to game development, Capcom changed dramatically,” Tsujimoto said.
The Capcom president cited Pragmata as a recent example of this team-based approach. Released in April 2026, the new IP became a major hit and, according to Tsujimoto, demonstrated the success of moving away from individual-developer-led titles.
